Right now, Eloy has been one of my favorites.

Wow ... I just got one more of their CD's ... can't even remember which, and it was like the 9th or 10th of theirs that I have.

Their "sister" band "Jane" is also really good, on the first 5 albums. Very similar, although one could say that Jane is more rock oriented.

Yep!  I've got ten Jane albums as well.  Once I like a band I tend to overdo buying their work (I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing).   It does sometimes get interesting with bands that change genres and lineups more than most people change their undershreddies though...

Personally, it's not so much the music as the production and mastering that killed my interest. I can think of a couple of recent albums which I would like but just can't suffer through because of brickwall limiting.  That and auto-tuned/pitch-shifted harmonies, which completely ruin my fun.

At one point, I started wondering if we weren't just made to consume as much music as possible - as if we needed to discover new artists by the dozen every month, and again the next month, and again...

I'd rather discover one album that I really like, old or new, and appreciate it. This year, I finally "got" Rush, the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd... I also got my first real taste of Blue Oyster Cult.

My favorite recent album though is the CD of the music "The Book of Mormon". It's been 3 weeks since we saw the show and my wife and I can't seem to get enough - every time we take the car, we have to listen to the album.

Not only is it the funniest thing in the Alpha Quadrant, ever, but it has dynamics AND people who actually can sing.

On the other hand, the new Ace Frehley album is coming out in August - having heard the single, I can already tell that this would have been an album I would have liked. But, brickwall limiting...

Not new...but it seems to have slipped under the radar of many rock and rollers...
I like their version of "Man Of Constant Sorrow" ...just some good modern rock to enjoy IMO.

You are a person that PLAYS music, and you have a good sense for it. Why would you be concerned and worried about the production/process in this situation, unless the music itself was not worth the discussion?

All it tells me is that the music is not worth listening to! Some of the old bootlegs and all that had bad this and that too! Some of the old bands did, too! But the music stood out so much that you forgot about the bit and piece that made it sound bad! But those Led Zeppelin bootlegs are still ... the best set of concerts EVER done in rock music!

Is it OK for me to suggest that as a musician you might want to stay "inside the music" ... and then later as a producer, you can go "outside the music"? Commenting on someone else's at that point is kinda strange ... it doesn't help anyone go listen to that music for its value. I completely lost interest in that piece if you mentioned it!

You'd understand what he's referring to if those Zep bootlegs were mastered and squashed into the ground until they had no headroom Pedro.  The original stuff may have sounded great, but this new rubbish of having everything loud kills it.

Exactly!! (and thanks for the suggestions I'll check these out). :)

I mentioned it a few times - I have no problem with relatively poor production when I enjoy the music. Which is why I can listen to The Beatles in Hamburg, or poorly produced records like KISS' Hotter Than Hell, or Sabbath's Born Again. Heck, I spent the best of the last decade listening to indie/self-produced acts.

Which is why I insist on mentioning albums that I KNOW I would like - I'm a lifelong fan of Ace Frehley, and as far as I'm concerned, his last album and the upcoming one are the best thing he's done as a solo artist.

There's some absolutely killer old-school, Les Paul through Marshall type of tones on his last one - but mastering just ruined it and I get ear fatigue. It's got NOTHING to do with the music.

That's one example out of dozens.

So for all the bad music out there, there IS some good music - unfortunately, a lot of it is butchered at mastering. In the end, I only have so much time left in front of me and I'd hate to waste it searching for that one in a million new album that I like when there are tons of classics I have yet to discover - including a few bootlegs.
