  • Does anyone else pay tribute to things when throwing them in the trash? Or am I nuts? (p.3)

I don't really claim any particular attachment to anything material and I've never blessed my clothing but my shorts are holy holey...does that count?

Well, without at least three holes they would be awfully difficult to wear.
(Just sayin'...)

Actually I guess I owe ol Sharke a "laurel and hardy handshake" for his post.  It reminded me about those dern slides I love and that I haven't tried to find any in a long while.  So I did some google sleuthing and found that even though Merrell hasn't made the "Memphis" in years it was making a model that for all practical purposes (except for the color) was identical called the "Traveler Tilt".  Which just happened to be on %50 off clearance at Merrell as a discontinued model.  And one of the only two sizes they had left was mine!!  Boom!  Be here within a week.  Thanks ol pal...tangentially:-)

I feel Google should be getting most of the credit here...what in the hell did we do without it?

I've got a place near me that somehow can repair pants like new when they split.  The last time it cost me $8.

But, then again, you're nuts, right?

I have a pair of Navy bell bottoms, real deal, bought on the base. They were my um, "trip pants" in another life that I no longer remember. They have well over 150 patches on them. I outgrew them, I got them when I was 18. I do believe there is more patched area than jean area left. They need a refurb but I am afraid to let anyone work on them, maybe I can find an old hippie chick to fix 'em up. They really need to be turned inside out and some kind of thin liner sewn in under the original denim and patches. Otherwise, they will split if I anyone were to try and wear them no matter what is done.
Shoot, I used to patch my own jeans if there was no one else to do it. Yeah, if your pants are not gone yet, get them OUT of the trash and either stitch them up or get someone else to. There are people all over who would LOVE to make a few bucks for stitching something back together, times are tough.

I'm thinking that one day when I am really old.. maybe my old blue jeans will fit again.

I'm going to take a look at the pants you named, I am not familiar with them. I stopped buying Levis probably 20 years ago because of that which cannot be discussed. I went to Lee jeans and was quite happy until the last time I needed new jeans. I will not pay 40 bucks for a pair of jeans, just on principle. I found some Wranglers at WalMart that have a bit of elastic in the waistband, they suit me well, look good, and cost about 20 bucks a pair, last time I bought some.
My younger daughter used to spend 150 dollars+ for a pair of jeans that, IMO, looked like crap. I'll never understand that... but it was her money.

Oh, and yes. I have said goodbye to things before. This probably does not put you in good company, lol.

edit> I looked at them. They look like good pants. Maybe I will get a pair as a gift. I can't imagine how you managed to wear them out, do you use bleach?

A little bit of duct tape and they're good for a few thousand more miles.

The Kuhls are very well made pants. I just battered the hell out of these. I spend the day running around/wrestling with dogs. Lots of crouching as well, it's no wonder they split on the side.

A couple of years ago I realized that stores had stopped selling good quality cargo pants and were selling nothing but these "skinny" pants that look ridiculous unless you're very tall and slender (which rules out 98% of the people who actually wear them). It then occurred to me that the only place I was going to get the kind of straight legged, good looking, rough and tumble pants was in outdoor stores. Once you sift through all of those horrible pants with the knee zips that covert to shorts, which make you look like you're on your way to a Dungeons and Dragons meet, there are some great hiking pants which are sturdy, have a great line to them and look cool in an urban setting. Kuhl seems to have the best ones. If you look around online you'll nearly always find some on sale.

I bought some new ones this year for the summer. They're much lighter than the other ones and have mesh ventilation in various discrete locations. They're a life saver when you're working outside all day in 90 degree humidity (and you're not a shorts kind of guy).

They usually end up frayed around the ankles from puppies chewing and tugging at the hem. I've had a few dogs cock their leg and pee right on me too. It always seems to happen when I'm stood in one position for too long at the dog park - they start to mistake me for a tree.

I don't know if I should mention this here …..
I tried to mate with a tube sock once when I was younger and I had to throw it out fast before anyone found the evidence ….

Well say what you may , I'm still on topic , there was a tribute involved
anyway , you got to move the arms in the picture bigger bro …I didn't say I used a cut below the ankle sport type sock .
I said tube sock …like in the type of socks that hug the upper calf ….
I'm glad we finally cleared up all the important information
