Ah perhaps you are referring to common sense. Nope, they don't have any!
Grin and well try and put up with it.

And no doubt they are giving you pointers on the dignity of the law.
Yep! Well, you may want to write a song about it perhaps.
(Ya know, something like Clapton's "I shot the Sheriff, but I did not shoot the Deputy!")
Well, on second thought, probably not.

Rain , that sucks.  Did they at least reimburse you for the cab?

Part of it - I am not yet familiar with all the ins and out of the system here, so I'm learning as I go.

Last time, they reimbursed a bit less than 1/2 of my fees, and that's when the lady finally told me that if I'd called in advance they would have made all the arrangements for my transportation, booking and all - not a penny coming out of my pocket. They must have some sort of agreement w/ a cab company or something.

Anyway, nobody had told me beforehand, of course.

They will just say they have too many people to do that kind of thing, and you are the one that has to find out.
I would say further but I will just leave it at that.
And any emotion you had about it, will be put off also by them.
It is perhaps like talking to a log - a tree stump!
I can't get into how I think what should happen to them.
And then they will talk back but answer a question??
It goes round and round with them until they decide they have no more time to spend with you which is quickly.
Too busy, too this, too that, and...............!
And probably if you rile them up which will take nothing, they will think that perhaps you should be in jail.
Might as well talk to someone on the street and see if they want to talk about anything, you may get somewhere with that conversation faster.

This tells you two things.
1. The guy has not confessed.
2. The guy did not take the plea bargain they offered on the lesser charges.

They are gambling that they can scare him into copping a plea using your testimony as a bluff.

Well actually it tells you three things.
3. He has a lousy defense attorney (or none at all). Otherwise his attorney would have contacted you to find out what testimony you could give against his client.

Then again, it could just be that the prosecutor is too lazy to prepare his case, and really thinks you are a critical witness.

Well, it is about a social disease the way I see it. ;)

The odd part is that, with every subpoena I receive, the charges get worst. What was a small time robbery when I was first summoned now involves home invasion, firearms and lots of nasty things.

Maybe I should take a tip from the cab driver of Asian descent who drove me back home the last time and told me to do like him and tell them - me so soleee, no speak uh engurish...

Doesn't work, they'll find an interpreter - staring blankly and ask "What?" in French a lot may be a better approach.

Just swear a lot (in French) and tell them you're practicing for the Tourettes de France.

What this really tells me is that justice is a very profitable industry and that there's a lot of money to be made even from the simplest case if you simply milk it.

The guys is a repeated offender, the charges are getting heavier every time, and ultimately, it's a whole lot more likely that he'll end up shooting an innocent than curing cancer or bringing peace in the middle east. If he wasn't profitable to some, he'd have been dealt with.
