If you were to hear the raw tracks of almost any modern day pop singer it would probably surprise you how "off pitch" they are. Not all by any means...Beyoncé and Lady Gaga come to mind as singers with great pitch...but many are simply adequate in the studio. And most are out sung by their own backup singers. Such is the technology of popular music "hit" recording. Even my own group of professional singer's original raw tracks sound markedly worse to my finished "tweaked" tracks. "Nothing is real...and nothing to get hung about".

We watched 20 Feet from Stardom a couple of weeks ago and it was appalling - but unsurprising - to hear that guy mention that studios now had a "tuning" budget. (How much talent in that movie! I had goosebumps for almost 2 hours...)

Britney's show here in Vegas is regarded as a joke. Most of it is lip synched.

By the way, I have to say that being constantly exposed to people who can actually sing, you do develop an unforgiving ear. Some of my old favorite singers I now can barely tolerate.

I'm also starting to think that it's not my singing that's gotten worst - I've simply developed a much finer ear over the course of the last couple of years.

Loves me some britt. Who cares if she is pitchy, she has many great records. I like "piece of me". Of course, u need the videos to go with the song.

You are on the money Krist, ol pal. We've now been through well over ten years in the popular music business where perfect pitch is no longer a requirement to be promoted. And it shows...sort of. Real time pitch correction is only getting better. I'm afraid that soon the "consumer" not only won't be able to tell the difference...they will not have the capacity to either.

Karaoke night again and again. Who is promoting this venue?
Next it is going to be autotune at karaoke night.
No wonder the businesses are probably dying right now, and music is plunging to new depths.
And I don't think that autotune can do the impossible or even that good without hearing it be on the song.
Usually the ones using it are doing so on purpose and can sing on tune, as for an effect.
Personally I think the others will just replace humans with robots that can sing with autotune.
Then watch the flood of songs on the Internet, both by humans and robots.
What a way to go!
