It a well designed filter, and is a shelf based on selection with boost and cut,
and is free of artifacts.  What it does is extraordinary to say the least.  The method - I'm sure that's
patented by Maag.

The freebie does a nice emulation (especially for the price).

Hey Larry, is that freebie still available and if it is is it available as a vst or only as a UAD plug? I can't seem t find it anywhere.

Thanks man!

Del,

Here's the info on KVR and the download link...

Luftikus is a digital adaptation of an analog EQ with fixed half-octave bands and additional high frequency boost. As an improvement to the hardware it allows deeper cuts and supports a keep-gain mode where overall gain changes are avoided.
Features
  • Hardware-modeled EQ.
  • 10, 40, 160 & 640 Hz bands.
  • 2.5 kHz shelf.
  • optional boost-only shelf at 2.5, 5, 10, 20 or 40 kHz.
  • Mastering and analog modes.
  • "Keep-Gain" option to avoid drastic overall gain changes when EQing.
  • Output trim to adjust gain.
  • Improved design to allow deeper cuts.

I think the thing about the Maag EQ is that the fixed bands are set such that they have a very noticeable effect on the sound of many instruments, for example, cutting 650 makes guitars sound clearer and less boxy.  Plus, the bands have a VERY wide Q, so a lot of audio is being boosted or cut when twisting the knobs.  The high shelves reach way down below their stated frequencies -- the 2.5 shelf actually starts boosting at around 400 or so.  Put these characteristics together, along with perhaps a little modeled saturation, and you get a very "musical" and popular EQ.

Cheers,
Eddie
