I'm offended by this waste of white space! Do you know how many trees are chopped down every year to make the internet?

You should be offended that you double dipped on the internest tree usage.

Like Al Gore flying around the world on his private jet, I consider it to be a just sacrifice because I'm raising awareness.

A slightly different take on this story...

Listening to the Opie & Anthony Radio Show on satellite radio, they were talking about this KFC event. As they dug into it, they discovered the family had previously registered on some 'charity donation' website and received about $595.00 in donations. They also discussed whether re-constructive surgery (for appearance purposes) was covered under insurance. In many cases it apparently is not. So here the family had a daughter with some facial deformities due to the bites and no real cash to pay for the re-constructive surgery. Their research indicated they received over a $100,000 in donations (including money from KFC) after the story broke. As long as this money goes towards the girl's surgery (and not a new sports car or something like that),  then the sympathy play comes into the issue. Does adversity, desperation, need justify the means? Just another instance of a question that has been asked probably throughout mankind's existence.

Supposedly KFC has stated that they deny all accusations made and have video and timelines to prove the falsehood of the allegations, but will let the family keep their donated portion just the same. So KFC gets a gold-star out of all this.

Very strange story.

Well, no... it doesn't. It reminds me of a jury who awards a judgment to someone against a corporation, when the corporation is not at fault but they have money and the person has needs. It is wrong.

So, if I understand, the girl really is hurt, no KFC worker said anything, they made that up, got attention and money? That is fraud, a con... any way you look at it. Kudos to KFC, I guess.

Stumbled upon this gem: "Bapu is a world-class poster with an atrocity to his name called FSF, his loops matter not to MusicMan100, in fact they PI$$ him off."

Better to be PI$$ed off than PI$$ed on, yes???

Why does the general public have such awful, awful judgment? How are they so utterly terrible at seeing patterns? It kind of freaks me out that these people can vote and serve on juries etc.

I have a friend who is a doctor.  She graduated in the top of a respected medical school, was the chief resident, etc.  I always used to think she was one of the more intelligent people I know.

However, she has absolutely no ability to apply critical thinking to the chain emails that cross her path.  I think she got tired of me debunking them, but I suspect that instead not forwarding those types of things any more, she just dropped me from that list.

So if someone who is supposed to be one of the smarties is doing that sort of thing, we do have a problem.

The other thing that really annoys me is when someone buys into that crap, and you post a link to a site which debunks it, they respond by saying "Well, those sites just have their own bias".

I've seen this before - academic prowess is unfortunately no guarantee of good judgment. Years ago I once hitched a ride to Scotland with a guy who was a physics professor. I spent the whole journey terrified as he overtook on blind summits, blind corners and literally came a couple of seconds within head on crashes with trucks and buses.
