  • What is up with audio gurus making tutorial videos that sound like not so good? (p.2)

I've seen loads of audio tutorials on YouTube which had terrible sound. Not loud enough, too loud & distorted, obviously using a terrible Bluetooth mic that picks up cellphone transmissions etc etc. But it's not just the "amateur" videos. I watched a Dave Pensado video recently on the subject of a stereo mixing technique...and the audio was mono! I've also seen some Groove3 videos where the narration was either too bassy or had way too much room reverberation. But my personal gripe is mixing tutorials where the example audio is completely out of balance with the narration (usually too loud). I also hate synth tutorials where every example they use is a raw sawtooth wave and it cuts throught your ear drums like a....erm....saw.

What I find atrocious is the "We've edited out the background noise with a noise gate set wrong where you can
hear it open and close every time the narrator speaks"!!!  That irks me to know end...it's "Whish" then words
and Whish again as it closes...ARGHHHH...these are pro's?  Scary...

That's almost as irritating as the heavily cut narratives where they've clumsily spliced out all of the natural gaps in the dialog. A lot of Groove3/Lynda tutorials guilty of this.

For fear of being blasted, I *try* to make some videos and for sure, realize my shortcomings.  I'd take some serious critique and please don't take this as spamming for my channel.  I figure I might as well throw my hat into the ring and see what happens.  I'd like to think I'm fairly 'thick skinned' and so therefore can take comments....hopefully some positive too.
I also realize that some of the "tech" videos aren't that in depth and as I've progressed along with these videos, I've set up with some better lighting and now DO record the audio separate from the video.  The problem much of the time is the lack of audio meters in Sony Vegas that I can relate to....so admittedly, much is done by ear.
One last item...my earlier videos are more in the *direction* I wanted to go (and you'll see if you look at some of the interviews I've done), but found I get a lot more views, doing equipment and recording videos.  So I've done those to try to build up a viewer base as well.
The main thing is I'm having fun, and learning quite a bit.  It's *hard* to have a video personality, in my opinion.

Here's my Youtube channels.... so blast away.  I've got my asbestos suit on!

btw...I just started doing this last winter, and although some vids don't really get any views, I've got about a total of 15,000 so far in just a couple of months, with some seeming to attract an amount of attention.  According to the YouTube analytics, people generally ARE watching the more popular videos, pretty much all the way thru.  So that's been a positive.

Eli Krantzberg is one of my favorite educational video makers. I feel like I could be friends with him.

I cannot thank that man enough for the excellent EXS-24 tutorial he made. Really took my workflow to the next level.

Reminds me of the time sum Juan here pointed me to a video by a mic mfg'r whose audio was total crap and I pointed it out. That sum Juan went on to defend the video with sum fuzzy logic.

I cannae be arsed to find out/Strummage around/remember who it was.

What about the completely silent video tutorials when they just type the narration on Notepad. Obviously I'm not referring to mixing videos lol - but I've watched a lot of "how to" tech videos that do this. I guess it's not as bad as the ones that have a horrible loud, sugary pop soundtrack though.
