"Shopping" for Gibson SG's on Sweetwater's site last night, I fell in love with the Derek Truck's signature SG. Isn't she stunning?

Not that expensive either - in view of the price of regular SGs I mean.

At any rate, by association, it reminded me of the Allman Brothers Band, which I've heard about for decades but really know next to nothing about - I mean, I'm familiar with the biggest hits I imagine, though I couldn't tell if it's one of their songs or what.

As unimaginable as it seems, I'm actually glad that I've kept so much stuff for later - this means I have a steady supply of awesome classic rock to discover and get all excited about, no matter how uninteresting the contemporary music may turn. A few months ago, it was Rush... Now it's time for the Allman Brothers.

Next - who knows, Lynyrd Skynyrd? :P

You should be in for a pleasant surprise, ol pal. TAB were a very good band for their time and Duane was an influence for so many slide players. Try Idelwild South...then their Fillmore concerts. Southern rock at its finest...at it's inception. Lynnerd Skynnerd...pah!

So sad that Duane was on that motorcycle right at their beginning in '72.  Then they lose their bass player.  It's amazing they stuck together and prospered!

Absolutely!!!!

Very similar to my 69 SG.  Go to my web site, select Music & Recording , scroll down to bottom.

It used to be cherry red before it was stolen (2 times) and dinged real bad. It was recovered both times. (I've posted those stories here in the past) I painted it white.... it looked good but, that was a disaster,  White shows the dirt too easily. I eventually  sanded it and went natural with just several coats of poly.

Until Gibson reissued this guitar as the "Angus Young" reissue for $3000, I had seen very few that had the tremolo tail piece on it like my SG has.  I think George Harrison also has one of the original SG's of this style.  Gibson's AY reissue wasn't a particularly popular reissue because prices dropped to the $2200 range rather quickly.

I know you will enjoy the SG.... to me, it's one of the finest guitars ever made. It has a slim, thin neck, it's weight is perfect, and such a sexy shape, throw in the dual humbuckers covered in chrome........ nothing even comes close IMHO.....

One band I was in, the other guitarist had a Gold Top LP. It was so heavy he was trying to rig up a double padded strap support. We swapped guitars for a set one night and he exclaimed that the SG was so light he could have used a piece of rope as a strap and played that way all night.  Yup... throw a wide strap on the SG and it will seem like you have nothing hanging from your shoulder ....... pull that trigger....!

Talk about 'in the eye of the beholder'..love the sound of an SG (especially Angus' clean/dirty tone), but really don't like it's looks at all.

I'm with you James. Hard to enjoy playing a guitar that is just butt ugly. Maybe if I could tell the difference of what type of solid body guitar the HB sounds made things may look different to me.

I played with two guitarists in one band that both had SG's. Later I had an Eb0 and then even later an Eb3. Not saying the are beautiful but they are a staple in my mind.

When I started playing in '63, the SG was too funky (is that ugly?) looking for me. Now I like the Historic '61 with the Maestro (though I tend to think of John Cippolina! vs other SG players). However, every time I play one, I seem "way off/lost" as I move up the neck. I suppose I'd get used to it, but after these 5 decades of mostly Strats, (several Guilds, Gretsches, a '68 Riviera and '68 LP Custom), the neck/body relationship throws me! LOL
I suppose for "humbucker Gibson", I prefer a Les Paul.

I love my SG. It may not be the prettiest guitar in the world. It's got 36 years of dings, scratches and fade. But when I hold it, it feels like a part of me. I wouldn't trade it for the nicest guitar in the world.
