  • Question about Kontakt 5 and libraries

I have bought several add on libraries for Kontakt. Although I can play the add on libraries fine, I'm having some difficulty in trying to get the graphics to display...instead I'm forced to look for the library in my file tree in order to load it. For instance I have Kirk Hunter strings....and I know others have the library and it has a graphic on the main Kontakt page which you simply click to access the library...when I loaded my library I never seen a graphic...all I have are the files which I need to search for. The Factory Kontakt libraries show up fine as a graphic to the left, things like Studio Drummer etc.

How do I get the libraries representations to show up?

Companies have to pay Kontakt for being sort of an official Kontakt Library being able to use Kontakt Player and showing up with a picture in the libraries section. I think Ni also tests them? That's why the little indy dudes like me are only ever in the files sections. I think only Pop Rock Strings would have the official Kontakt library status and be in the library window.
People know how to get around this and can make the stuff show up in the libraries, but its technically illegal and developers themselves don't do it as it would make NI mad which would be bad for us.

I don't use the library feature even for registered libraries, preferring the file system since it's organized the way I want it to be. It can get cumbersome if you have a lot of libraries, but you always have the Favorites feature to organize and quickly find the ones you use most.

Bigcat, is it "technically illegal" for ME to create a Kontakt library out of the instruments I purchased for my own use? I own the full versions of Kontakt 4 & 5.

Honestly I have no idea. I think it's like doing a mile an hour over the speed limit. I doubt anyone is going to know or care. Certainly in my experience with NI they have no interest in inconveniencing or upsetting their customers, so doubt you would have anything to worry about. Not of course that I'm encouraging you to download my brand new 40 stop organ and create a library for it! (ok that was shameless) ;P
I'm looking at it as a small-time developer and explaining why Kirk Hunter's fine products, save Pop Rock, don't come that way.

First, make sure you "add library" in Kontakt...there's a little button near the Library Icon.

Second...and I can't remember the file type...but Kontakt has to see these files in your library folder to load the graphic header.

Not at my DAW now...sorry.

Maybe someone else can chime in.

No, they can't stop you from doing what you want with your own software. The only way you could potentially get in trouble is if you were to distribute your libraries. Then you might run afoul of copyright/licensing. However for your personal use, you do as you please, doesn't matter what they think.

I like using the database feature.  I'm not only able to find instruments I need really quickly, but I'm always finding instruments that I've totally forgotten I have.

Read the license agreement that came with your sample library. Every one I've bothered to read says pretty much the same thing: you can use the samples any way you like with specific exceptions. Those exceptions include distributing the samples and using them in a commercial sample library.

So as long as the library you create is for your personal use, you are in compliance with the terms of the license agreement. Have a blast remapping, mixing and matching and extending your purchased libraries!

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think I was violating the L/A. I just like organizing the instruments into libraries that make sense to me. I don't alter anyone's samples or instrument scripts (not yet).
