I decided to upgrade my smoke alarms today. My old one was chirping and even a fresh battery wouldn't stop it. So time for new ones...I bought a couple cheap ones and also found a First Alert one for $20 bucks that has a LED light that lights up when the detector goes off. I put this one by the outside door to light a path to the door in the event of a fire. I think it's pretty cool.

A few months ago one of my neighbor's house caught on fire, and he died from smoke inhalation. He was trying to get out, but didn't make it. They found him right by his door. He probably couldn't find the door due to heavy smoke, as it was a very large and hot fire. Cause of fire was smoking in bed. I'm thinking a light in the smoke alarm would be helpful in case of a fire.

Another comment, my neighbor who died in the house fire, had smoke alarms in the house, but they had no batteries in them. Somethin' to think about.

Along the same theme, if you're a parent who has children (especially teens) that have games and/or stomp boxes that take 9V batteries, make sure they understand exactly WHY they shouldn't "borrow" the battery in a detector.
