Whatever the problems with SampleTank, I just didn't think it justified the kind of attack language being used the IK guy. FFIW, I thought his initial response in the thread was perfectly acceptable and only got a little snarky after he was attacked and insulted. Far from being sarcastic to their "customer base," he was simply giving as good as he got to a couple of people on a forum who attacked him personally. I think this idea that company representatives should sit still and "take it" as people savage them is totally bogus ...

I disagree.  IK's people are coming in here asking for our money; we pay their bills.  The relationship is similar to employer/employee.  If you were a boss and one of your people took a sarcastic and derisive tone with you, would you think that's acceptable?  Would you think more highly of that person?

I worked in customer service a while ago, and if my supervisor had ever heard me get snarky with a customer, no matter how irate or misguided they were, I'd have been fired on the spot. I indeed had to "sit still and take it" every day as people ranted and raved and spewed insults at me.  It sucked, but from personal experience, it does your company no good to respond in kind against current or potential customers for any reason.  It only fuels the fires of anger and negativity, and hurts goodwill and the company's image.  Why IK seems to believe the opposite is a mystery to me.

Cheers,
Eddie

What I've noticed is that this "snarkiness/sarcasm" is not just limited to the BOGO thread in here.........it has been an ongoing method of "replying" to most long term IK users (even in other forums....i.e. KVR). This has been a cumulative process that's brought out the negativity. I suppose when their backs are against the wall and having to continuously defend a promised product, there's only so much ground they can stand on........without having some form of retaliation.

+1 and right on Eddie!

and like sharke pointed out above, People have choices and IK could have made the right choice and just not have responded.

Personally, I would like to see Larry come back to the forum. I'm saving too much money without him here...

I worked in CS too, for over ten years, and while that is true, the first thing that comes to mind when I read these threads is that I feel for the guy on the receiving end.

The other thing that comes to mind, and which doesn't require any experience in CS is something my mother taught me: try and be a decent human being

Which means: don't insult people, don't call them name, don't cash in on the fact that they've been told to sit still and take it and behave like a complete **** just because you can technically take it all out of them.

Because even if one can get away with it, that doesn't make him right or absolve him - it's still ugly.

CS is usually done one-on-one, in private, or in a dedicated environment. If things get out of hand, a superior will be called in, or another solution will be found.

This isn't the case here - it's a public forum where IK folks have no other privilege than being let in as users.

I think it's a loss that Larry decided to quit, but imho, it also shows that maybe he'd taken this crusade of his against IK quite seriously, to the point of leaving these forums altogether only because a few of us very politely - without ever attacking him personally - commented that we thought maybe the negativity was a bit too much.

OTOH, more than once I've personally benefited from Obi's presence around here - the guy has always been of assistance, prompt to reply and absolutely courteous whenever I pm'd him.

Yeah, +1 for what Rain said also, I think he nailed the other side of the coin. Obi also helped me out a few times that I could not get a response from IK through their normal channels. He definitely is/was an asset to the company. I do miss having him around also.

Yes agreed, +1 Rain. The Internet has, unfortunately, created an environment in which people feel comfortable dishing forth a level of insult which they would never engage in face to face with a person.

Nor do I buy the idea of this alleged customer/vendor dynamic in which the customer automatically has the moral upper hand regardless of the circumstance, or that buying a product automatically entitles you to some sort of lifetime right to dictate a company's business plan and receive some kind of preferential treatment when it comes to prices and offers.

IK is no different to any other company in that they're in it ultimately to make a profit. They exploit the fact that we have money to spend; we exploit the fact that there are people willing to spend thousands of hours developing the software we use. It's a two way street and nobody owes anyone any more than what they expend in this mutual exchange of values. Buying any kind of technology is a risk - I bought a MiniDisc player in 2003 and it was obsolete within a year. I just moved on.

Like I said in the other thread, I kind of like that IK guy fights back a little, even if it is a little snarky. He's provoked with far worse. I'd be more inclined to think of IK as some faceless corporate blah blah if he didn't respond. They're people, not cardboard cutouts. The tone and the language used against him was out of order and has no place on what's supposed to be a civilized adult forum.

I too agree with Rain that civility and respect from all sides should prevail within these forums.  It seems to be a widespread pastime to b*itch and moan about anything and everything these days ... whenever a company puts something on sale or announces a new product, it takes approx. 1 nanosecond for the complaining to start.  It's silly.  Even over at the UAD forum, which used to be a relatively tranquil place, the very first post about the current sale was a bunch of whining ... geez!!  There were no UAD reps responding in kind, though.  That's wise of them.

Anyway, enough of my whining about whining.  I hope this forum continues to be a good source of information about the tools we all enjoy using.

Cheers,
Eddie

He said he was done with this forum in the IK GOBO thread and that was it.

He's gonna have to change his name to ccBobby at this rate. ;)
