Thanks for sharing your story Jimmy. That must have been a lot of work and a lot of fun.

I watched the movie and was surprised to learn how many of my favorite albums were on the list.

I was also interested when I realized that so many of them had a sonic signature that tied them together.

The sound of those drums defined a sound for me. Realizing there was a specific relationship seemed like kind-of-a-big-deal when I watched the movie.

Are there any leak tapes of Sue Sadd and the Next?

best regards,
mike
H Mike,

Sorry, no leak tapes for Sue Saad.  You can look up Sue Saad and listen to a number of songs we did for films.  Those track were done in my Sound Logic Recording Studios studio I built in Los Angeles.

Interesting view on the sound signature.  At Sound City Studio A, it was a large echoing room.  Drums had a live, crisp feel to them.  I recorded my on a slightly elevated floor.  Tom Petty recorded his on a high platform ( I think to reduce phasing from the floor relfections).  The control room monitors were extremely bright and rather hard on the ears.  They did translate incredibly well.

They've been showing "Sound City" on the Palladia channel the past few days. As Tony indicated, it is a worthwhile watch if you get the chance. Re-showing right now as I type. Lot of bands recorded there. There is a lot of attention to the Neve console used there. Definately an appeal to the recording crowd. They discuss the crossover between an analog studio and digital.

The Paul McCartney sequence was interesting. He really came across as just one of the guys. It was cool.

Missed this first time round, so I just watched it and found it very interesting. Whilst I've never particularly been a Nirvana / Foo Fighters fan, the more I see of Dave Grohl, the man, the more I think what a cool guy he would be to hang out with. Seems a genuinely nice guy with a great sense of humour and a very deep appreciation of all styles of music.

I'd like to watch it. How do I do that?

Here's a snippet of a review.

That's a Gibson Barney Kessel guitar BTW.
Had one for awhile. Looks just like mine actually.

rimshot, sounds like we were doing LA around the same time frame. I think I left around 83.
Ever hear of Salty Dog or Salty Puppy or Platinum Recording studios? I worked there.
Actually, I don't recall 'Sound City' except after the fact since it's famous..

I finally got to watch it on an Emirates flight from London to Dubai, not the best sound for sure on an inflight entertainment system, but its well worth watching. Ghrol comes across as a really likable guy.

It was on cable last night. I was flipping channels and happened upon it on channel 66..( VHS-1 ? ) ....... I caught it just a few minutes in and watched the entire show.  My wife, who usually doesn't like the shows on that channel happened to be walking through when Stevie Nicks was singing.... and she stopped to watch for a minute or two.

Dave's love for the music and that old console and 2" tape is commendable. It was good to see that ...as they said in the documentary.... the console didn't get bubble wrapped and stored in some warehouse or museum somewhere...that instead,  people are still able to use it. That was a labor of love.

Great movie! I watched it last night and it was very interesting. Those old clips from Buckingham Nicks sounded fantastic. Everyone gets a little giddy when McCartney shows up. Who wouldn't?

And what was Paul playing? Some kind of electric-uke/banjo/dobro mixup. Sounded okay though.
