  • Some minor earthquake activity in Southern California

There has been a swarm of earthquakes here in So Cal.  "Minor" isn't the correct word the strongest of the three was a 5.3 in La Habra.  That's actually considered a moderate quake.  I felt it here 32 miles south of the epicenter.

So far, no serious damage has been reported.  I hope there isn't any to report.

Just some fat people on vacation Jan.  Nothing to worry about.

Heck, as long as I'm nowhere near you, you're probably safe!  Big quakes seem to find me.  I remember watching TV when I got home after the Northridge quake and seeing an aftershock start, standing on the couch and, a mere few seconds later, "surfing" the aftershock.  There were at least two 5+ aftershocks in there - very unnerving!  Here's some trivia (yeah, I have it saved in a file 'cause I think it's interesting - don't want to add to the list though!):

Sylmar - 1971 - 6.6 (visiting an Aunt near Los Angeles - felt like a bizarre roller-coaster)

Superstition Hills - 1987 - 6.6 (Staying with a friend after playing in a dart event the prior weekend - had a plaque come off the wall and graze my head before scoring a direct hit on my shoulder)

Landers - 1992 - 7.3 (On vacation near Big Bear - kind of smooth and the entire metal rail along the lodge units went BRANNNNNNNNGGGG!!! and woke everyone up)

Big Bear - 1992 - 6.5 (Same day as Landers so still there - this was, by far, the scariest for me - I was just starting to doze off back to sleep when this one hit with a big thud then kept getting worse and worse. Even my room back in OC was trashed when I got home! Everything on two opposing sides of the room had been tossed into the middle of the floor...)

Northridge - 1994 - 6.7 (I was staying at my friend's place on Sepulveda near that famous Galleria for the weekend and was up early so I could drive home when this stupid woven art piece "jumped" off the wall, we stared at it for half-a-second wondering "what the...", then all hell broke loose - I ended up surfing the couch while my friend peed himself in a doorway - half the bulbs in his chandelier broke by swinging into the ceiling - I had to take a very long way home to OC!)

BTW - Here's a picture of couch surfing (no, that's not me).  I heard about it from the first roommate I ever had who was from back east and it was his way of coping with the frequent earthquakes we were having back in the mid-80's.

I experienced most of those.  I moved here in '83.

Thankfully, there were no injuries.  Unfortunately, 50 people are now without homes.  I wish them good luck in starting over.

Mostly in an apartment building right above the epicenter.

Wow, that sucks.  I've never heard of a quake that small doing more than creating cracks and maybe knocking things over inside a building.  Lucky for them that they're all still alive then!  I remember seeing some of the buildings that fell and they don't go straight down usually but fall flat to one side like a house of cards does.  That's actually worse on the occupants since the whole building has more room to lay even flatter with fewer voids to survive in.

It didn't collapse.  It was "red tagged"--determined to be structurally unsound.

I kind of assumed that with the lack of casualties, but it still majorly sucks unless they can get in to take most of their belongings out.  Hope they remembered to get renter's insurance!  It's cheap but, without it, they're pretty much screwed since the Apartment's insurance doesn't cover the property of tenants.

I've just heard that 20 homes have been red-tagged!  I'm sorry, but not surprised to hear that.  I don't know if that raises the number of persons displaced.

There was also a 4.1 aftershock today around 2:30.
