I'm guessing you don't want to know how many of them think Harry Potter is the current President.

You're probably right on that one.... I don't want to know.

I thought he is?? Doesn't he broom around selling high flying spells?

As we say down here..."human beings, why bother?"

One thing I have to fight constantly though, although I'm sure this doesn't pertain to any others here in the basement, is the truth of the idea that I'm certainly not "one of them".  Or am I?

Everybody knows that can't be true. You have to be at least 45 years old to be president!

Harry Potter, to set the record straight, is the Secretary of Magic. Appointed by President Jeb Bush. Jeesh. Muggles!

I went through a phase of arguing with 9/11 conspiracy nuts. Virtually everything they come up with is based on cherry picked facts and out-of-context quotes at best, and outright fabrications at worst. It's so easy to debunk their nonsense with actual facts but some people are completely immune to reason.

I've recently started reading my newspapers in web-format. There you can comment the news and articles directly.
It is truly shocking what kind of manure majority of those comments are. Most commentators either have misunderstood the whole thing or have picked an appropriate line that can be twisted any way you want.
The less knowledge, the edgier opinions. It's appauling and frightening.

Was it Churchill who said that the strongest argument against democracy is a conversation with a voter, or something like that.

I know what you mean. I try my best to avoid the comment sections as much as possible. The extent of stupidity has a devastating effect on me.

And there's just so much hate... I've recently come to the conclusion that the internet has become the outlet for frustrated people who don't have a life and feel powerless - they go on the web and literally try to destroy others with words.

A friend of ours back home was a contestant on The Voice.

She had a "dual" against a reasonably talented 15 years old who'd won the heart of that part of the audience who is completely tone-deaf and uneducated - people who love "poor little things" and "cuties". For them, emotion = a voice that breaks and inspires pity.

Our friend's performance was impeccable and totally classy, and she won, rightly so. There clearly was no competition. But some people didn't see it quite like that...

The comments I read about her afterwards were unbelievable cruel - the most disgusting things were said and it went on for days, so much that the issue made the headlines. Those people would visit her official FB page and post comments filled with such hatred - even I who have come to expect the worst from people was completely blown away by so much hate and vileness... At some point, it almost felt as if some people gang up on her because they saw others do it. To call them animals would be an insult to animals. Only humans can be so vile.

No one deserves to be treated like that, unless they're guilty of the most vicious crime. And all she did was to win an early round  of a contest and be selected by a judge. That was unbelievable.

Our friend who's an incredibly sensitive person took it very very badly, but remained a class act through it all.

But for me, that was a signal that maybe I should limit my time on the internet.

If you take a step back and examine from a distance a statement like, "that part of the audience who is completely tone-deaf and uneducated - people who love "poor little things" and "cuties". For them, emotion = a voice that breaks and inspires pity", does one note at least a hint of "cruelty" there?

Interesting observation, worth pondering.

My initial impression was that they were not mature enough to appreciate a confident woman who actually looks like a woman, breathes sensuality, refinement and class and who sings as such. A genuine lady.

Obviously, there a few "Quebecer particularities" at work - for example, rarely have I seen a people so adamant about their emancipation as a nation and yet so circumspect, even contemptuous of emancipation on an individual level. My people don't trust confident and successful people, they don't trust educated people (and our friend is a well spoken person, used to interviews, who dared used the word "dichotomy" twice on the show).

You get the picture... Typically, the public's choice always go to the poor victim. I guess they can identify and a victim doesn't pose a threat to them and their power.
