• Coffee House
  • Seriously, we lost a good friend here in the Coffee House as of today. (p.4)

34 years isn't far off.  I think it became Stumps market (near SDSU) around then.  I knew them from the 60's thru the mid-80's and last talked with them in '92.  I used to play darts out in Poway a lot in the mid-80's.

He might have been a bad doggy, but no one wants to put him down......

A bit harsh maybe? A slap on the snout might be just as effective.

I remember a time a while back where we asked a lot of hard questions about humor in the Coffee House. There were a number of folks who felt that some of the humor was stupid and they resented seeing it everywhere throughout the CH. Some stated rather plainly that they resented wading through reams of silly, nonsensical posts and they felt that certain individuals were ruining the CH with their inane drivel. Some who enjoyed posting such things felt that they were no longer welcome. For a time, some of us drastically reduced our involvement in the Coffee House in order to comply with the wishes of those who resented our presence.

If my memory is correct, that was one of the reasons Bapu started the FSF. (Correct me if I'm wrong about that.) It was a place where silly nonsense could be posted without criticism. One of the other things that came out of that discussion was the idea that if someone doesn't want any silly posts on a particular thread in the CH, they should say so up front. Otherwise, they should accept the fact that this is an off-topic sub-forum and tolerate some silliness.

This is often a vibrant and friendly community of people with a common interest. I've seen this place rally around someone who was hurting or going through a hard time. I've also seen them celebrate each other's successes and big moments. In general, the Coffee House has a positive, happy vibe where laughter flows freely. For some, it is a refuge from the ridiculously hostile environments in other forums. We have people from all over the world talking, joking, and hanging out with each other. When someone decides that what we have to say is not funny, smart, serious, or profound enough to post here, it comes as a shock.

I understand why Beagle has chosen to remove himself from the Coffee House. I hope that this will not be the ultimate solution for the rest of us. In my opinion, we lose a little of the character of this place each time someone leaves feeling unwanted.

May I suggest that all of those folks who don't want silly posts on their threads state this in their original post? In addition, perhaps some of us who frequently post nonsense can try to respect the wishes of others and try not to derail their threads with buffoonery? I don't know. I don't have a great solution other than asking everyone to have a little respect for each other.

I'll miss Beagle around here.

I say, if you don't want to see silly threads, then stay upstairs!
