I use Saturn a lot, although I have to say in all honesty that I have amp sims that do a better job as amp sims and other saturators that do as well as Saturn. The benefit is having all those variations in one plugin, and the ability to apply different algorithms to different frequency bands.

Of lesser importance, though still a significant differentiator, are the modulation options. For example, I like to apply heavy distortion to just the first few milliseconds of a bass guitar. I know of no other distortion plugin that'll let me do that.

I didn't have a really good delay so I grabbed Timeless 2. I have a feeling it will have to be studied in depth to get the most out of it. Pretty deep editing options and no presets. Time will tell but for $100 I'm not going to complain. Ya, Canadians pay about $100 after exchange and fees. GLobal sales require global currency IMO.

Mine comes with quite a bunch of presets, not sure what's up with that.
It's certainly worth diving into (I need to do more too).

Also, I have DC8C and find I don't really get along with it. Could be my crappy technique though, it certainly is versatile. The VU meters never seem to indicate what I expect them to, and I find it hard to get it to do what I'm looking for.

Not sure why the presets did not install. All the factory presets are available in a download from http://www.fabfilter.com/support/downloads/

Yup...Timeless has a bunch of presets. Check the download.

Hey, thanks for the heads up re. presets. I find presets to be hit and miss in Sonar. Some plug ins have them, while others don't. Perhaps I (shudder) need to look under the hood?

It sounds FAB!

I love DC8C, but to be honest Pro-C taught me how to use a compressor. Try calibrating the VU meters to -14 or just read up a bit on what VU meters are for. You can also ignore all but the gain reduction meter.

Hey, thanks. Weirdly the gain reduction meter seems to respond very differently than that of other compressors, I'll try that calibration thing.

I may be too stupid to used advanced compressors like that, I really love the CA2A and the RenComp from Waves and such - typically compressors that do a bunch of work for you with very little knob/slider work. Hmmm...

The great thing about two-knob compressors is you drop 'em in and they just do their thing. The downside is they just do that thing and nothing else. Which is fine if that's the thing you need.

Classic compressors such as the 1176 and LA-2A are actually quite primitive devices. We love the sound of them due to habituation: they've been used on gazillions of recordings, so their effect seems "natural" to us. But in the digital world there is no reason to be limited by what can be conveniently implemented with tubes, transistors and op-amps. No reason a compressor can't be used for creative, remedial or surgical purposes. That's why I prefer a deep, do-everything processor, even if it comes with a learning curve.

Case in point: The modulation capabilities in Timeless 2.  Let's just start with the XLFO.  I'd pay good money for that as a MIDI Out standalone.

This is what Sonar's per-track arpeggiator should be.  I've been stumping for something along those exact same lines for a decade (when it was a Project5 exclusive).
