The great thing about two-knob compressors is you drop 'em in and they just do their thing. The downside is they
just do that thing and nothing else. Which is fine if that's
the thing you need.
Classic compressors such as the 1176 and LA-2A are actually quite primitive devices. We love the sound of them due to habituation: they've been used on gazillions of recordings, so their effect seems "natural" to us. But in the digital world there is no reason to be limited by what can be conveniently implemented with tubes, transistors and op-amps. No reason a compressor can't be used for creative, remedial or surgical purposes. That's why I prefer a deep, do-everything processor, even if it comes with a learning curve.
