I'm a bit afraid to do this upgate after the nightmare I had with the automatic install Win8.1 gave me back in Dec. Glyn, did you do a manual install and any issues with the intel video driver in 8.1?

It all went pretty smoothly.

I upgraded my quad capture driver and Classic Shell before hand. I had a bit of a scare with my Cakewalk A-800 Pro because google initally led me to an out of date driver. See here Once I got the 8.1 driver there were no issues.

I also did the upgrade on the internet computer and my grandsons computer, no issues on either of those, except error messages on one of them because I had not upgraded Classic Shell.

Thanks Glyn......I'll take a closer look at what's actually being installed (especially the video driver) before moving forward. Although, I haven't had any issues at all with Win 8......as a matter of fact, it works well with all my hardware/software. If it aint broke....

In a world without fences and walls, who needs Windows and Gates?
or
If Bill Gates had a penny for every time Windows crashed...
...oh wait, he does.

ok ok....I'll go back to the CH and sit in the corner.

Just a question for you Windows 8 guys - is 8 any better than 7.
I have 7 on a number of computers and have been very happy with it - I just found someone in Europe who can supply me genuine windows 7 upgrades for the XP Computers I still have - I'm picking them up next week and then shall upgrade a couple XP Systems when I get back to Cape Town - one unfortunately has LOTS of programs so I am hoping I don't have the same re-authorization issues.
So if Windows 8 is better, can I ask in which way?
Thanks
Nigel

There was some small pain involved, but it was more than worth it. Mainly because 8.1.1 hit all the targets for smooth operations that 8.1 was missing on my setup. I was ever so close to wiping the drive and installing Win 7 prior to 8.1.1; Win 8.1 worked "ok" but there were some glitches especially with graphics and cpu performance with Sonar.  I'm so glad I didn't roll back.  Now my system is smooth, fast and stable for all the software I have loaded including and most importantly - the music software.

Nigel, the main thing you should check is to see if all your hardware (audio interface, midi controllers etc...) have good driver support for Win 8. The only thing I didn't like in Win 8 was the Metro UI, and that was easily solved with the free application of Classic Shell (my current pc looks just like Win7, but functions under Win8). I just made sure all my hardware had good - excellent driver supprt before upgrading.

I forgot to add that touch screen functions in Win 8 quite well.............if that's something you might be interested in for the future.
