I'm in the process of
downgrading one of my PC's so I can use my racing game setup below.
Why do I have to downgrade? Well, the main connector requires a game port and all of the games are now about tens years old or older!
What I can't understand is that during the late 90's into the early 2000's, simulation games kept getting better and better (and more realistic). Only computational speed, memory, disk space and monitor size were really holding it back. Now, with everything I just mentioned light-years better, the best racing simulations (according to those who REALLY get into it) are still those from around 2003??! And now you're forced to watch on those ridiculous wide and short monitors (because SOMEONE obviously thinks the only reason to have one is to watch movies on - they're feckin' useless for real work too...).
I get why the knee-jerk reaction to not improve flight simulators happened, but that's no excuse for other areas. We should have games by now that use REAL images where everything is accounted for and modeled accurately. Instead there are some flashy BS arcade games - fun, but useless.
I want to experience the thrill of these activities without any real danger. But this isn't the only area, I'd love to see games like the Descent series updated to take advantage of all the power, speed and storage that's now available. Any game that can cause some people to get motion sickness is obviously doing something right! If I want reality, I'll go outside and experience it, but when I want off-the-wall fun then let me have that too! The clueless idiots in Hollywood shouldn't be driving what we use computers for...

Ok, I'm off to install XP and a flippin' SoundBlaster that has a game port again and hope all my games still work, otherwise I'm stuck with a very expensive and useless dinosaur.
