I am a very happy VS-100 owner, and find there is a lot to like (love) about this little device. But there are a few things that annoy me and wish they would make some improvements. These are not deal breakers by any means, more of a "why did they do it this way" sort of thing.

I will post a couple of my own, but would love it if anyone else has anything to offer this list.
Maybe others have an answer or a solution to some of these perceived annoyances they would like to share?

  1. Why is there a button for "DAW" / "WAVE RECORDER" if you can't actually swap between them. If a USB cable is plugged in (and to a computer) the DAW Is automatically selected. If there is no cable, Wave Recorder is selected. You are not allowed to make the choice yourself, so why have a button?
  2. Why can't the VS-100 connect as a Storage Device to the computer while at the same time work as a Controller? If you turn on "Storage" it becomes a really expensive, tiny little hard drive. It no longer works as a controller when you do this.

2b: On the same note. Why does one have to restart the machine if you make this change. I could likely live with it if I could turn on storage, move files, turn off storage, continue work - without rebooting the VS-100.

(There is a very recent thread about this, and is what inspired me to start this thread)
  3. Why is the internal routing so limited. Surely they can do a firmware update that will allow us more routing capabilities. For instance, the Headphone out is fixed to the mains. Maybe I want to assign Output 3/4 or 5/6 to the headphones instead!
I have a few others, but I'm more interested in hearing what others might have to say

good thread because I think this unit needs some OS update soon.
Some buttons make no sense as you mentioned. I still don't understand fully the assign button
and when track buttons actually get lit? Don't know what ACT buttons does in standalone mode etc.

I agree with all your points and also I'd like VS100 to be more integrated with sonar
- e.g. metronome should turn metronome window when connected to DAW same way as marker buttons works BTW.

Good call on the Metronome button when integrated with Sonar.

FYI: When full assign is turned on, the entire left side of the VS-100 can be assigned in Sonar using act. Everyy button and knob becomes assignable rather than just the few at the upper left. BUT - this comes at a price, because it will no longer funtion as a stand alone miser in this mode.

The ACT button does nothing in Stand Alone mode, and worse yet, those four knobs and button to the upper left cannot be assigned in another DAW. They only work with Sonar!

this 1.5 firmware looks line unfinished to me...
What are the chance we'll see upgrade any time soon if at all?

BTW, do you know if we can assign fader "button" action? because it does work as pressed doesn't it?

Another thing is View button (with shift), work strange - I think it should switch different views in Sonar.

The lack of output options in stand-alone mode. The poor channel meters. And the non existent gain reduction meter on the compressors. I still have not figured out how to appropriately set the the make-up gain.

To be honest, I didn't start this thread thinking Cakewalk (Roland) would read anything and fix it.

If you want a change you need to submit it as a feature request: (Yes, the VS-100 is in the list, and yes - I have submitted a few suggestions)
http://www.cakewalk.com/support/contact/featurerequest.aspx

This was just meant to be a light hearted list of things that drive us crazy about this otherwise fine unit!

1. The small knobs for the microphone pre-amp annoys me. The settings are very critical (parts of millimeter) for stereo recording, which I always use for acoustic guitar.
I know this a hardware issue but maybe it's possible to create a software mixer with different costum settings?
2. A new driver working flawless with win7 64 bit seems urgent. I had tremdendous problems getting X1, win7 64 and VS-100 under the same hat. The system wouldn't boot and if it did I had several crashes as well. The adventures (and solutions) are documented here: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2401665

Thanks coda2media for providing the future request link and codamedia for this thread.
