I don't know why this makes me crack up so much. Alan Partridge's attempt to serenade his Valentine's date with a rendition of Close To You. I loved this show.

Yeah I'm afraid to watch the movie. There is something unsettling about seeing your favorite sitcom given the "cinematic" treatment. With the sitcom format, the production sits in the background and everything is driven by the script and the performances. When they make a movie out of it, all of a sudden the big budget production gets in the way and distracts you from what you found funny about the TV show.

I actually found that a little with the latest season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. They've upped the production quality and it takes a little from the show's original charm.

That air bass clip you posted is a classic. The bit at the end where he mimes taking the bass off and then thinks better of it is pure comedy genius. Coogan is great. Although I saw him in Whole Foods in New York a few years ago and he looked a bit of a mess, lol. He was slumped over his shopping trolley in resignation as his perky girlfriend steamed ahead making a huge deal of the grocery shop. I kept hearing her yell "Steven....STEVEN!" all over the store. He looked like he was the worse for wear after a night of partying and had been dragged out to the supermarket against his wishes. I felt for him.

I didn't think I'd like the movie, but it's excellent, because they kept it within limited surroundings. The scene where he escapes out of a window is just brilliant..I'll say no more.

I do think Coogan's in danger of overdoing Partridge now though. Midmorning Matters was OK, but it lacked the supporting characters to give him a foil. Also, he's got really gaunt looking these days, which doesn't seem to suit the character somehow. In the Scissored Isle specials he looked quite odd actually.

It's actually amazing to see how young he looks in the original series. I was in my 20's when I first watched it and was convinced by him as a middle aged man, now when I watch it it really looks like a young man with makeup. I can't believe how young the character is supposed to be as well. They have him as 43 in the first series in the motel. It's a big shock now to think that I'm older than Alan Partridge.

What I'm also realizing when I watch it now is how much of him was ripped off by Ricky Gervais for David Brent.

I also love the Geordie character Michael. His accent is hilarious, speaking as a Geordie myself. It's actually extremely good in a way you don't often see from non-Geordie actors, but just wrong enough in places to make it funny.

Had a weird experience a few years ago when I had a client in NYC who was a Tony award winning Broadway actress (who was also in an episode of Seinfeld and had a part in Mike & Molly). She did an almost perfect Geordie accent for me and I was stunned. Had she lived in Newcastle years ago, I wondered? Maybe she had Geordie relatives? Nope - she'd auditioned for the stage production of Billy Eliot a few years before and had had a dialect coach.
