I think he means that the following guitars really should all sound similar - as long as they have decent necks:

I guess there's not much about this thread I understand...I thought it was about acoustic guitars...sheesh.
I think it's time to go spend my free time doing something else.

I think all the wood talk is way overated with guitar bodies.  Necks may be a different story.

I don't understand...would you explain that please.

I just think most any guitar will sound like, well, a guitar. Some will sound a little better because of the wood. But, I think the feel of it in your hands is more important. If it feels right, it will sound better IMO.

Not saying, (well, I guess I did:) that the wood isn't something to be considered. I've just found through the years, that the nicest guitars I've ever played were "nice" (to me) because of the way they played (felt).
You know. Like BUTTA..

Back OT.

I picked up one of those Chinese "junk guitars" made by Silvercreek. They were touted as "very Martin like". A friend (who owns a 70s Martin, not sure which but I know it is a decent one) was over just after I got it and played it for about 20 minutes and declared "doesn't sound much different than my Martin".

The only drawback is it has monor intonation problems from fret 10 and above but my acoustic playing style is such that I rare play that high.

Sure would make things easier if everybody felt that way about your guitars. People could just pick from one page rather than thousands for the guitar of their dreams.

But until then and while I'm building guitars I think every little detail effects the end result and can't afford to "underate" the worth of one little thing even though I know there are players that have no idea of the attention given to those many details...or why. More importantly to me is that I know there are many players that do know about every little detail and it doesn't take them long once they get it in their hands to evaluate one.

I do agree that the player is a major part of the sounds...if he/she has that instrument that can perform for them.

Clint, on that same visit at NAMM, I played these Blueridge guitars. I remember being very impressed with them and thought they sounded very good. I do remember that I thought the didn't project quite as much as some of the more expensive brands, but I was still thinking about getting one someday. I am a Clapton fan, so the Historic 143 was tugging pretty hard at me. I have never liked all that ornate stuff they do on the headstock though. I likes it simple up there.
