For as long as I can remember I've always found certain voices pleasurable to listen to, they give me a tingly hypnotic feeling and can often make me drift off. It's totally non-sexual and the voices can be male or female. There's no rhyme or reason to it, and very few voices do it. I've found that the voices which have this affect on me usually have some kind of quirk or weirdness about them, or even a mild speech impediment like a slight stutter. Certain accents help. They're usually quite slow talkers. Sometimes when browsing tutorial videos on YouTube (usually programming, math or science) I'll come across someone whose voice has this magic effect and I'll bookmark them for listening to when I need to wind down and fall asleep. I always thought this was totally weird and would never dream of mentioning it to my friends lest they think I'm weirder than they already think I am . And admittedly, it is all a bit strange.

Anyway tonight I discovered that there's a term for it, Autonomous sensory meridian response.

Another weird thing, and I'm not sure if it's related, is if I concentrate on a spot on my forehead, just above the middle of the eyebrows, eventually that spot starts tingling. It gets more and more intense until it's almost unbearable, but in a nice relaxing way. I really have no idea why I'm posting this

.... I'm sorry, I was drifting off there for a minute. What were you saying?

Actually I know a guy who practices hypnotism. He says he can hypnotize someone just by talking to them while they know nothing about it.  Ever since he told me this I tend to keep my distance from him... just in case.

No that I think about it, that may be exactly what he hypnotized me to do. Hmmm.

Wasn't hypnosis shown to be a case of people going along with the hypnotizer because they don't want to make a scene by telling them it's not working?

No.  However, no one can be hypnotized to do something they really don't want to do.  That said, we're talking about the subconscious level here not the conscious level which is where your main choice discrimination takes place (for better or worse).  And this is exactly what hypnotherapy accomplishes, it bypasses the mind's line of defenses and communicates directly with the unconscious area (which is far more suggestible).  Advertisers use this religiously to bore your conscious mind while they brain wash you with their brand and thoughts that drinking some awful crap like Bud Light will somehow make you more popular and better looking.

Going back to your question, we learned in stage hypnosis class that there will be some that "go along" but they are actually poor subjects and we were taught how to avoid using them in any act.  I'm sure you can think of memories where someone you thought was very conservative maybe had a few too many and were acting wild and crazy.  Just because you're outwardly reserved doesn't mean that something inside of you doesn't dream of being an actor/actress or rock god.

Needless to say, the power to remove "common sense" as some people call it can be used inappropriately and we had a few required classes regarding practice ethics and morals (which were sometimes humorously ignored in class for instructional purposes - lol).  So when someone asks you why you've been running around the room pretending you're a chicken, it's actually because some part of you wants to have fun being an extrovert (or you're just a whack job   ).

So... how many cases did you shlug away before you finally figured this out?

Just curious.

BTW, I *AM* a chicken. I don't need to act like one. cluck cluck...

I've never had a Bud Light.  I figure I've had beers in 18 different countries and, overall, the non-light version of Budweiser was the worst tasting of the bunch so I didn't see how the Light version could be any better.  Bud IS the best marketed though.  The next best might be Fosters...

(I assume that's what you were asking about since I'm already popular and better looking, ya?)

Bob Ross, painter and host of the TV show "The Joy Of Painting" had that hypnotic effect. It use to be on late afternoons on PBS and was a great relaxation 1/2 hour after work.

Do you think I could be hypnotized to stop procrastinating? It's the bane of my life.....
