I use to smirk to myself, wondering if he really new just what he was actually singing about.

Another vote for Lounge Lizard. I haven't played all the candidates mentioned, but I don't know of any sampled E.P. that can give the smooth and expressive timbral response to velocity that this physical modeling synth does. I can always hear the velocity switching with sampled E.P.s and it bugs the heck out me. I generally prefer the expressiveness of a real "synthesizer" over a sampler even if the timbre is not a dead ringer for the original instrument or any real-world sound.
