I won't wish you luck Craig, but I do wish you well. As an newish self employed small business owner myself, I quickly learned this: Luck has nothing to do with success. The harder and smarter I work, the fatter my bank balance gets. The side of the road is littered with the rotting carcasses of the lazy. Get after it hard and heavy and never quit trying to do and be better every day. Do this, and you'll get where you want to be.

Thanks guys.  Right now I'm going into it thinking it's merely an avenue to publish a few apps for the Android phone, but who knows after that?

It sure would be nice to create the next Candy Crush Saga and make $400,000 per day but I'm certainly not expecting a lot going in.  (Being in two start-up companies already that made me less than $20k combined over four years of very hard work can temper ones expectations!)

Hi,

May you do well, and finally find a chance to get out and throw a few snowballs, and then have a giggle listening to some music, if you want to.

Only advise I have, is to make sure you find an accountant (mom is a major one here in Vancouver, btw), to ensure that you know that every pencil receipt is MANDATORY, and that you start off correctly, and not waste any money that you end up not representing in your next tax return. It's all a benefit to you, not the IRS, by the way, since the less you show on your Schedule C, the more the IRS makes off you.

And yes, Randy is fairly right in making sure you know what it takes ... but you have to find a day to yourself, in order to recharge batteries once in a while, or it will all be gone sooner than you imagine from exhaustion!

Hang in there! Success is not guaranteed, but being "seen" is.

Have you looked at the developer names in the Google Play Store lately?

My hope is to someday have a forum on MY website that works like crap too...  (Ah, one can dream, can't they?)

This is exactly right.  Sometimes things happen by luck or circumstance but generally, it's "luck" that you create through hard work and perseverance. I've heard it said that luck is when preparedness meets opportunity.

Same story here, I started a business 22+ years ago. A number of folks told me I was making a mistake.... economy's not right, towns too small for another company doing that, etc, etc, etc....  I went door to door in the downtown area passing out cards, adverts in the paper, and before long, I "lucked" into a guy doing rehab work and from that point on.....  well, lets just say, it's been a nice ride on the capitalism train for the past 2 decades.

I agree.  Still not sure if this will actually be "that" business yet (it's currently slated to just be an avenue to deploy any Android apps I develop) or if I'll be headed back to other IT work once I'm back up-to-date with my skills but...  That said, how I ended up riding the capitalism train for two decades myself was by being more prepared than those around me and taking a risk (which made me a 19-year old programmer for a defense contractor).  So, maybe history will repeat itself (minus the part where the government and financial institutions steal everything I had earned that is).

NOT happy about being pinched in the job market right now though!  I can't get an interview for a decent job thanks to my age (not that anyone will admit that) and my apparent lack of "current experience" in whatever they're looking for, OR because I'm over-qualified for any available entry-level position or even brain-dead work...

Thanks again for all the well wishes though!
