  • Any convolution reverb recommendations?

I like Breverb for algorithmic reverb, but I could do for a better convolution reverb. So suggestions as to what to look at? I really can't spend too much on it, Altiverb is out on account of cost (also I'm not a fan of the interface for the brief time I tried it in a studio). I'm really, REALLY wary of trying EastWest Spaces given the fact that Play has not been able to function correctly for about 5 years now.

So, recommendations of things to look at?

For free there is SIR

http://www.knufinke.de/sir/sir1.php

Waves IR-1 has had good reviews
and you can usually get the IR-L for reasonable
(same reverb with less features)
and has a LOT (4.8 gb if you download all) of Impulses
@acoustics.net, which, if you have a Waves account, you can
download anyways.

PerfectSpace is good if you're willing to do the work to get it to sound good,
and if you have Xx you should already have it.

And here are some Donationware Impulses that have high ratings..

+1 for Reverberate by LiquidSonics. They also have an even less expensive version called Reverberate Core that might interest you.

Kind regards,

Define "better". Are there specific features you're looking for?

A convolution reverb only sounds as good as its impulses.

That is correct...and how you use it (settings applied)
Major difference between them - the adjustable settings.
While some may handle the impulses better CPU wise...
the sound is primarily defined by the impulses themselves.

Main things I'm after:

--64-bit (I don't care to use bitbridge)
--Good impulses included/available
--Reasonable UI

That's a pretty modest list of requirements. The Meldaproductions offering goes far beyond them and it's cheaper (< $50) than Altiverb.

I wouldn't limit myself to bundled IRs when there are so many good ones available for free on the 'net. Get a plugin that has the features you want, then start your IR collection. Make sure those features include the ability to offset and change the length of IRs. You may also want to consider whether true stereo processing is important to you. Take a look at PerfectSpace for an example of just what a full-featured convolution reverb can do.
