My son (age 13) had a few years guitar lessons. Now he wants Guitar Pro 6, because his teacher uses it.
I downloaded a demo, but I couldn't test it thoroughly. The demo does not play downloaded tabs. And that's the idea. Download tabs and practice them.

There is also an iphone version. But I'm afraid, with this version, you will have to pay for each tab you download.
Any advice? Or experiences?

I found this to be very helpful and useful...

http://www.riffstation.com/

it shows the chords, allows you to isolate the solo's and slow them down
without changing pitch.

If his instructor is using GP6 and that's what he wants,
make sure he gets the Educational Discount...

Thanks cclary,
what does riffstation do for you?
Is there a riffstation community sharing tabs, or does it analyse wav files and gives you the score/chords or tabs?
