Been on Vegas since version 5 - guess that makes me a 'lifer'. 

A new version is coming out, you can tell because with Vegas, they rev the consumer stuff before the pro stuff. The consumer stuff just moved to version 13 a few weeks ago. It'll be soon, though still a bit, before the pro version gets updated if they keep with their historical methods.
 
The other reason this is cheap is the Vegas Pro Premium SKU has been discontinued. It is a bundle of Vegas and Sound Forge, and they don't sell that any more. It has been replaced with the Vegas Pro Suite on the video side, which is Vegas Pro and Hitfilm ultimate bundled, and the Audio Master Suite on the sound side, which is Sound Forge and SpectraLayers bundled together.

Vegas, I believe, goes more after the consumer and independent markets. They're not in head-on competition with Avid or Adobe. Sony also tends to use them as an in-house resource to support their video camera and broadcast business.
 
Sony Creative Software consumer products are, at the same time easier, and yet more advanced, than the Joe Consumer-level product that those compete with. They also do a lot of upgrades into their Pro products, and people tend to stick around. Vegas Pro compares very well to the competition at the small-shop professional level. Other vendors begin to stand out in terms of larger team workflows - but then you'd have to buy into their particular editing idiosyncrasies, which is the antithesis of what Vegas editing is all about.
