I'm going to have to come to cclarry's defense here (believe it or not!), and say that his statement was a self-deprecating one.
He said "I'm assuming that..." and then noted that those who make assumptions often make an a s s of themselves. So, he was saying essentially, "I might making a fool of myself by making this assumption."
I didn't read it as directed to you, but just to himself.
