has anyone used CueMix FX successfully with cakewalk?
It's supposed to dovetail with any host audio software (in my case, SHS 6), but I'm not hearing the processed effects when playing back from sonar. I know CueMix is receiving the right signal because I can hear it when monitoring through the MOTU deck. Yet, there seems to be a breakdown of communication in the following path:
1) Music signals sent to MOTU
2) MOTU sends music to be processed by CueMix
3) CueMix sends processed music back to MOTU
4) MOTU outputs to cakewalk/sonar

Again, i think the problem is in step 4.
Any advice?

I wonder if either I misunderstand the idea or if perhaps you do.... ?

CueMix does not, as I understand it, send anything to SONAR. CueMix combines anything you are inputting into your MOTU device and lets you send it back out as a Cue or Monitor mix.

SONAR grabs your individual inputs and routes them to your tracks all by itself.

Cuemix can take anything sent to your MOTU main outs (SONAR's output) and combine that with anything on your MOTU inputs.

CueMix FX, I assume can only apply effects to the CueMix.

If you really want to get the CueMix effects into SONAR you can probably hard patch yet another return... but I'm imagining a scenario that could create a hard wired feedback loop... be careful.

Does that make sense?

it is very possible that my apprehension of this software is way off, but i would assume it is capable of this.

If i am way off, how do i use the CueMix effects in my recordings?

I suggested that I may be incorrect but it is my impression that the intent of Cuemix FX is for monitoring and it was never intended to be used the way you wish.

You can learn how to do this:

Or you could use the MOTU as a freestanding hardware FX and use something else to record in to SONAR. I doubt you have any interest in doing that but as a point of discussion it is a possibility.

As I understand it the idea is to use the CueMix FX to make your monitored signal sound OK (eg reverb and compression) so as to make you more comfortable while performing. Afterwards one would use the far superior sounding VST or DX EFX selections with SONAR to mimic the sound you were after.

The more realistic perspective is too think of the Cuemix FX as mimicking the FX available within Sonar while providing the ultra low latency while monitoring.

i don't think i have "superior" effects (such as VST or DX EFX) with my SHS6.0
are they add-ons or do they come with later versions of SONAR?

i have "cakewalk" effects, but they're pretty crappy (which is why i was interested in using CueMix)

When I said "superior" I was speaking generically and refering to the Sonitus suite and Perfect Space etc etc.

I hadn't noticed that you are using Home Studio... I assumed you used Producer etc. so I don't know what effects you have with that package and of course it's all open to opinion but certainly you can get some free EFX at places like KVR that sound good.

Kjaerhus audio classic suite is especially good sounding and it's free.

Anyways, unless someone shows up and points out that I have been mistaken I think that's the sort of work flow you should be considering.

Wrong thread wtf!!!

I use a Motu 896 and have cue mix - I have NEVER been able to figure out how to use it properly, so I long ago gave up with it - one of the most counter intuitive paces of software I have ever used and although I have read and re read the handbook, I could never grasp how it is suppose to work.

Thank you for this admission!  Me too!  I thought I was the only one that could not figure Cue Mix out.  I have had 828mk3 hybrid for three years or so, and I just have never figured Cue Mix out.  I watched all the videos, but still it is too complicated for my brain.  I did get it to work, but I just keep it as it is, do not try to reroute or make different configurations.  I came to Cue Mix from being a M-Audio FW1814 user, and M-Audio's interface was so easy to use.  When I was considering the 828 purchase, I looked at the videos of Cue Mix and thought this looks good.  But when I got it, I just never understood it.  So when somehow I got it configured, and just I leave it alone.  I do not use the 828's DSP because the Round Trip Latency at 64 samples is good enough so that I can just use Sonar X3 and vsts for recording.
