Fireworks attract idiots. It's just one of those things.

Absolutely - there's a prick who lives a few streets over from me who makes his own fireworks.

And not the 'pretty' ones, just the extremely loud ones. He's been arrested and cautioned a few times for setting them off at inappropriate times, but when they are actually allowed (on Guy Fawkes night and New Year etc), he really goes to town. My theory is that he's er... compensating for something

Even last night, there were fireworks only going off for about 10 minutes after midnight, but this tool decided to start up his 'display' at about quarter to one - just to be different, just to get noticed.

Sad really.

Hey Steve, I think the best fireworks FAIL had to have been from my home town of San Diego in 2012.  They had FOUR barges all setup to show four synchronized shows around San Diego Bay.  17 minutes of fireworks all accidentally launched at once in 15 seconds of noise and smoke (and five minutes early - it was the final test that set them off).

Here's what happened:

(And, yes, out of all the videos that covered this bust, I picked this one 'cause the reporter is HOT! )

Our own fireworks show was a bit of a bust, as fog rolled in and completely obscured half the show. Always a risk when your platform is 500 feet in the air.

They also had fireworks somewhere around here last night. Though they were pretty reasonable and did it at around 10.

The year was off to a good start as far as I'm concerned - got drunk with my wife, sat in front of the fireplace and listened to music and picked up songs we wanted to record. The new Bluetooth speakers downstairs did a fantastic job.

Nevertheless, earlier today, I've noticed that I could hear my MacBook's internal HD - this thing was as silent as it gets, so that worried me a bit. I ran the disk utility which warned me that I should back up everything and reformat the HD because it could't be repaired.

So I logged back in and enabled Time Machine for the first time and backed everything up to my new external HD - which is "Time Machine ready" - whatever that is, and backed up everything.

Then I restarted and thought I'd re-run the test before reformatting. Well, this time it worked. It repaired my HD just fine.

I can still hear it but I'm breathing more easily knowing that Time Machine is running and keeping everything backed up. I usually back up important files manually, but having everything backed up reassures me.
