Here is how to set up an A-PRO controller with SONAR X1.

Turn on your A-PRO. Open SONAR X1. Go to Edit-Preferences. In Preferences, select the MIDI Devices menu. For inputs, select A-PRO MIDI IN, A-PRO 1, and A-PRO 2. For outputs, select A-PRO, and A-PRO MIDI OUT. Then select the Control Surfaces menu. In other threads, it has been told that you need to select the Add New Controller Surface button (the button with the star on it). Instead, in the Controller/Surface list, have the A-PRO-1 input set to A-PRO 2 and the output set to A-PRO. Make sure the ACT and WAI boxes are selected. Select Apply and close out of Preferences. In the ACT Module (up on the Control Bar. You may need to select it from the drop down menu.), make sure the Controller/Surface is set to A-PRO-1. Select Controller Surface Properties. On the page, make sure ACT is enabled, as well as on the keyboard. Now your A-PRO will work with SONAR. B1-4 buttons select what you want to control with the knobs and sliders on the A-PRO. B1 controls the Track Parameters in the Console view. B2 lets you controls effects. B3 lets you control synth parameters such as Cutoff and Resonance. And B4 is for utilities.

Hope this helps.

Not sure why, perhaps because I am running Windows 7 64-bit, but my options have slightly different values to yours. In MIDI inputs I have > A-PRO, MIDIIN2 (A-PRO), MIDIIN3 (A-PRO). In MIDI Outputs > A-PRO, MIDIOUT2 (A-PRO). IN order to get the ACT Control Surface to work, I have to select MIDIIN3 (A-PRO) as the input.

According to Roland manual (and this works):

Controller/Surface Settings:

Controller Surface = A-PRO
Input Port = A-PRO 2
Output Port = A-PRO
