Well, kind of.... it all started with my mother in law buying a doll house kit.
It is a christmas gift for my niece. It ended up in my closet and my wife "encouraged" me to put it together so they could buy some furniture for the house. So, I dragged it out, and thinking I would have it assembled in less than an hour, carried it to the dining room table for assembly, and opened the box.
As soon as I saw the parts, unpainted parts, bags full of unpainted parts which looked like a model airplane..... I knew I was in trouble..... deep trouble. I browsed the assembly instructions.... all 30+ pages of detailed assembly instructions.
Time for plan B.
Set up some tables in the empty bedroom upstairs, unpack the box and read the manual. This project was going to be a real job. No screws, no nails, no snap together parts. Wood that needed at least 2 coats of paint and oh yeah.... don't paint where the glue goes.... yep that's right... glue that sucker together. And use tape as the vise to hold the parts while the glue sets. One bag contained close to 1000 postage stamp sized wood shingles for the roof.... they all had to be stained with an oil based stain. No latex or water based glue on the shingles since it would make them curl.
I reckon I put 80+ hours into the house. I finally finished it last night and removed the final tape from the Boston Lap ridge shingles this morning. Some touch up paint yesterday and it's done.
And no, this is not something I plan to do again...... but then again, my daughters might have girls and so I would have grand daughters and this is not out of the realm of possibility...... it was interesting.... and no, you don't always follow the instructions..... I had to redo something that was clearly indicated in the manual to do.... but was obviously wrong. Put poly on the floor they said...... took me an hour to scrape it all off because it was peeling.....and stain the floor again.
Nothing was pre-assembled...... nothing.
Wadda ya think?
I think it turned out pretty nice. I think my niece is going to like it a lot.
