There seems to be two schools of thought on this plugin: those who say it improves just about anything you throw it on, and others who say it ruins just about anything you put it on. Personally, I'm not firmly in either camp but definitely lean toward the latter.

I useTS-64 Transient Shaper often, especially for a snare pop, but I use it on a parallel buss, mixing the transient to the original drums buss. I've tried the same thing with Trans-X, but again, only as a parallel buss. I almost never use it inline on a track, for the letter reason bitflipper mentioned.
 
I will say, it's worth $49, and I bought it because of that. I think the sale is over now, though.
