This is horrific. I substituted raw shiitake mushrooms for the usual button mushrooms in my salad the other night, and the next day came out in the most horrific rash all over my body. It looks like I've been whipped in places. I had a sussppiiccion about the mushrooms, given that it was a new addition into my diet. Googling around it seems that some people come out in a rash from eating raw shiitakes. I've been walking around my whole life thinking there was no food I was allergic to, and BAM! What a downer, I was really digging the taste of them.

Do yourself a favor and don't eat any genus Psilocybin mushrooms for awhile.  Otherwise you'll find yourself staring at your rash and freaking out.

If you do you run the risk of discovering  left handed frying pans!  Turns out I was all wrong about the left handed frying pans and I don't know why

Yeah, I was thunkin' that he really wanted to have a nice trip without the kids! Or us, for that matter!

(Sidebar:) Actually that didn't happen to me. I spent my time reading a couple of books and listening to Phaedra, and A Tab in the Ocean, and Selling England by the Pound and Space Ritual ... on the same trip ... and for the first time hearing those albums, it was massively awesome! I don't even remember eating anything but the music was awesome.

The foldout album cover full of stuff in the original Space Ritual was worth the trip all by itself! I didn't even need Michael Moorcock!

Yeah good job I wasn't allergic to the magic variety otherwise I would have spent most of the 90's in rash hell....

It's gotten worse today. On my hands and fingers. Oh the urge to itch....lol

Girlfriend: "couldn't we just eat them cooked...they only cause rashes when they're raw"

HELLA NO! I will not be letting these vile poisonous Satan's toadstools anywhere NEAR my kitchen in ANY state, cooked or raw. In fact I'm going to start wearing a bracelet which says Do Not Feed This Man Shiitake Mushrooms, just in case I'm ever in a coma and someone thinks about feeding me them through a tube.

Sorry about the rash.  At least now that you know about the shiitake allergy at least you can take steps to avoid it in the future.  Good luck.

Thanks, and I'm looking back to a couple of mystery rashes I've had in the past and wondering if I inadvertently ate something with them in.

A friend of mine was sick and lost a lot of weight over a year.  His doctors thought of all kinds of causes and ran all kinds of tests that didn't help.  Finally, they sent him to an allergist and found out that he was allergic to 10-15 food items including yeast and corn.  Just those two and in most everything!  Once they put in on the proper diet--mostly fresh food and salads.  No bread and nothing with corn syrup.  After they got everything out of his system, he go better and now he can have a more normal diet.  He just has to not overdo a few items.

He'd been allergy-free for over 25 years before this happened.  I discovered that allergies can turn on and off at different times in our lives.  Until then, I thought an allergy was something we were born with and it would be that way for life.

I was a rash once.  In retrospect, I don't think I really thought that decision all the way through.  I was in a hurry and didn't consider the consequences.

There's an expression for that type of decision, but I can't think of it right now.  I'm too busy scraping off this ointment.
