Darn I guess I should check this...
Look like there's no version control on COSMOS.DLL (which is a bad sign) but my file size is 3,985,920 bytes is yours the same (just in case we are on different versions).

I guess what you are saying here is I've just bought a limiter and the rest of the functionality is suspect :(
I tried VST Plugin Analyser (ran as admin) but couldn't get it to open the VST.

Thanks

Alex

I'm unsure about the exciter side of Cosmos (I trust Bit's findings but then again I tried recreating what it does with EQ and it didn't sound the same) but I have to say I like what the stereo imaging knob does and I can see myself using that on a whole mix.

I haven't used Cosmos in a project yet but I've played with it on some dull sounding drum loops and it did a fantastic (and quick) job of polishing them up.

Alex, I expect you'll have to use the 32-bit version of the plugin with VST Analyzer, as it is a 32-bit application (made with SynthEdit, I think).

sharke, the stereo imaging feature is a simple Mid/Side balance control. You can do the same thing with Voxengo MSED, Channel Tools or a host of other free plugins.

There are some benefits to using fixed-frequency filters over fully-parametric equalizers, as evidenced by the popularity of plugins such as MaagEQ, Voice of God and emulations of classic hardware filters. They're certainly quick and easy, and may implement filter curves that are difficult to recreate using a parametric. (However, I had no problem duplicating the Cronos "Exciter Drive" filter settings using Pro-Q, although it did require two filters: a broad bell at 8KHz and a high shelf at 9.6KHz.)

Says "32 bit and 64 bit are supported" though?

Guess I should read between the lines...

If I load it in Sonar I would expected dotted lines around the title bar if it was 32 bit wouldn't I? Or is this behaviour just reserved for softsynths? This is definitely a case of buyer beware (customers are being misled), I hope the guy is getting better in hospital but I can see this being a sheep in wolfs clothing right now. I'm gonna have to get into testing VST's myself, really never bothered until now but now I see the light, esp after you pointed me to SynthEdit :)

I really do hope his surgeon isn't actually a doctor disguising himself as a surgeon.

UPDATE - I assume as 32 bit effects don't need bitbridge it doesn't matter whether it is 64 bit or 32 bit?

Are you sure that's what it's doing? I understand what you're getting at but I just can't seem to get the same results from Channel Tools. Could it not be that it's introducing subtle differences between channels that actually adds more to the side content, rather than just boosting one over the other?

Pulled back to Cakewalk bundled Nomad EQP-2B (which appears to emulate the EQP-1A although I'm sure I'm going to be proved wrong as it's Nomad) for the moment but added Cosmos to the chain for limiting and Stereo image. So no excitement right now and might have to re-review this again at a later stage.

sharke, I haven't examined the stereo effect yet, at least not in detail.
But really, a simple M/S balance is the safest kind of stereo enhancement and probably what you want anyway. I'll check it out and report back.

When I tested Cosmos, my impression was that the exciter part of the processing was something other than just EQ.  The bass business (sub-bass tuning and drive) did indeed seem to be nothing more than a resonant boost at the tuning frequency.  But the exciter, that was something else.

Here's how I tested.  I played a Vangelis synth-only track with Cosmos as the sole effect.  I used one of the more subtle factory settings and monitored the output in Span.  I am certain I heard a difference (a pleasant one) and the audio spectrum heights did not change (but they did look a little bit denser).  Now, this obviously is not scientific.  It's impossible to do even single blind testing when you're the only one participating.  As an aside, one thing I liked about Cosmos was that the factory presets were actually usable, and not the typical over-the-top stuff you find in a lot of plug ins.

The exciter will probably boost the EQ at the more extreme settings, but I didn't monitor with Span at extreme settings.  Unfortunately, I did not record my settings, so I can't suggest someone else tries to duplicate my test.

I don't care if Nomad calls it a reverse entropy machine that also slices and dices AND keeps your wifey happy...Cosmos sounds fab and puts the "good" on most anything ya try it on.  It rates a 10 in my "hey, now it doesn't suck anymore" tests:-)
