The Maillard Reaction
Thanks for the info Bats.

"i blew out the woofers playing Guano Apes really really loud..
and had them refoamed, and then they sounded even better!"

:-)

I did that with my Genesis IIs a few times.

I gave them a way a while back but still sort of miss them.

:-)

Keep Rocking!!!

appreciate the review, the comments help...

the drums, are all live, played by Brent Dacus (D/FW artist) recorded in a treated room, to a Roland VS2480 machine, then output to wav files and sent to me.

the EQ i chose while mixing down, took out the nasties, and added the sweetness.
overheads, spaced pair.

there is some phase issues in the overhead recording, which i cannot cure.
since someone else did the recording of the drums for me, i don't know the cause of the phase, only that it is there, and i worked around it.

the arc ONLY affects the sound of the playback thru my system, in my room.
and yes, to compare the 'before and after', i would need to have a mix done as first pass, without the arc, and then bounce that down and say "here's the way i hear it in my room without the ARC, and without any of my lengthy survey and study", and compare those...

but it still would not really tell you anything.

all arc does basically, is make my room sound as if it was 'flat', and that makes it WAY EASIER to mix.
you either trust the arc, or you don't.

to me, it looks as if the end result (stereo wav file bounced to track without ARC) looks like a really good balanced curve on the graph, and sounds balanced on playback on other systems.
even well treated rooms, are STILL going to have some anomolies.

I just replaced my Truths with a set of Adam F7 speakers (WOW what a difference) and re-ARCd for the new monitors. It's interesting to see the two curves - the one for the Truths and one for the Adams. If anyone is interested, I can try and pull screenshots of the curves. What's interesting to me is the ARCd version of the Adams is different as you would expect, but not drastic. With the Truths, it was very drastic. I read that to be that the monitors are much better to begin with, and I like the fact that ARC isn't having to do too much sound shaping.

I only did this last night, so haven't got to mix with the ARC on the Adams yet...

Well ,you said we might not notice much of a difference from past mixes. You were right. Excellent musicianship and mixing skills BTW.

I don't notice any significant difference and if it took you hours less time and saved a lot of work then it would seem that you found a way to get it all done faster and more efficiently, especially if your curves are coming up almost exactly the same.

Not sure what kind of room you have. Looks a lot larger than a decent bedroom which is what I'm using...of course I can branch out into the kitchen or the bathroom with longer cords lol. From most of the ARC curves I have seen it looks like bass is a big problem which isn't surprising given the smaller squarish rooms many of us use.

I notice an immediate loss of bass energy when I kick in ARC. When I first used it I was sure something was wrong. It seemed easier to make it sound good without ARC at least in that room. When I got the recordings out to try somewhere else reality set in.

I have made good use of the VRM type settings too.

You are welcome Batsbrew.

So my room is 10 x 11. Two doors and two windows. I have acoustically treated the room using many recommendation online, but have maybe a little more to do, as my Mackie mrkII are blooming bass heavily in that room, and here I was looking to get a second set of monitors with 8" woofers, but no way now. I also read that for my size room a 5" woofer is enough.

But I am surprised at the bass that is hanging around. I can try to beef up my bass traps, but man it is something else different from when I auditioned them in a huge room with acoustical treatment.

So I will try the bass trap beefing up approach, and then probably just get ARC2.
