Hi,

A magnificent drummer, get "For Girls that Grow Plump in the Night" and listen to it. Uncanny and masterful! For my tastes "he made" Caravan, by his accents!

From Caravan's Facebook page:

"It is with a very heavy heart that we announce that Richard Coughlan passed away on Sunday 1st December.

Richard was a founder member and drummer for Caravan for over forty three years. Richard died at his home and had been in poor health for the last few years.

He has played on all of the band’s releases to date and was one of the early birds in the history of the Canterbury bands having sessioned with The Wilde Flowers and predecessors. Despite not being well Richard played percussion at Caravan’s reunion gig in London in December 2010 and received a
standing ovation.

His unique style of playing and wonderful character will be sorely missed. We pass our sincere sympathies to Richard’s wife Sue, his daughter Beth, and all his family.

We will publish a fuller obituary in due course and will have a book of condolences on the website so that his friends and fans can leave a message.

Richard was 66 years old
May he Rest in Peace."

Sorry to hear that.  I've been a fan of Caravan since "For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night" came out so many years ago.

RIP Richard.

Still is, by far, one of my top ten albums of all time!

From beginning to end.

And the orchestrated version in the "New Sinfonia" album (get the remastered one that has it all, instead of the album that doesn't) is just as good if not better!

I have "New Sinfonia" on vinyl but I haven't listened to it in years.  I'm in a small apartment there I haven't found a good plance to put my turntable.

Old55 I have "New Sinfonia" on vinyl but I haven't listened to it in years.  I'm in a small apartment there I haven't found a good plance to put my turntable.

The album does not have things in order (according to the remastered CD information) and is missing at least 20 or more minutes of music that the CD has.

I love that whole album and it is the type of thing that I wish that rock music could have done more and more and more ... beautiful mix of orchestra and rock and very well designed and directed/conducted!

And the orchestra didn't want to go out for an encore (they would not get "paid") and Pye told them to bugger off and the band went and then the orchestra came out!

It sounds good, Pedro.  I keep an eye out for it.
