Very much RIP.  I lived in Capetown between '69-'73 as a child, and still remember being utterly confused by this apartheid thing.  It's eye opening to consider that as a young child there is absolutely no recognized differentiation of race - all of that is gradually learned and imposed.  I wanted to travel on the top deck of the bus, but wasn't allowed for some reason that I couldn't understand.  My brother and I used to run up the stairs and try and hide before the conductor hauled us out.  Very weird, and so happy that changed.

On one of the news shows(probably CNN), they made a point of how when Mandela was elected president that he intentionally avoided any retribution and kept the government officials in their jobs.  These were the same people that kept Apartheit going.  Many in South Africa were calling for him to at least fire these people--or worse.

Even though it took longer to get rid of Apartheit, it was a much more peaceful and stable transition of the government--unlike what's been happening in Egypt and other Middle-Eastern countries the last few years.

Just an example of what Nelson accomplished where others have failed.

It appears there are two different Nelson Mandela's.... the one we all see on the TV and the one who lived a life quite different from the fantasy presented on the TV and news.

“We Communist Party members are the most advanced revolutionaries in modern history ... the enemy must be wiped out from the face of the earth before a Communist world can be realized.”—Nelson Mandela, during his 1962 trial for terrorism. Quoted in The Wanderer, July 1, 1990, page 6

It seems he was quite the singer too:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcOXqFQw2hc
