Looks good.

The SG 70s Tribute - which was second on my list - looks even more amazing. If I can get a work permit and a few gigs... This one looks pretty much exactly like the first SG I really dug. The mini hum buckers are a nice touch.

The SGJ will be back in 2014, with a few difference. Prices also seems to have permanently been marked down. The burst options are better - had the below been available, it would have been a no-brainer - but overall, I prefer the 2013 and it's black tuners, black pickups covers and nut, etc...

The only description I've found mentioned a slim SG neck, whereas the 2013 had a rounded 50's neck. But then again, I've seen so many contradictory statements even in regards to the 2013... I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I have noticed lately that Gibson is turning out some pretty descent guitars for $1,000 or less. I have plucked several of them off the wall at GC and given them a test run.

The MSRP price on the SGJ went down quite a bit.

The Gibson site itself lists it at $499 - which is $100 lower than the average in store price for the 2013 SGJ before the year end sale. On Gibson's site, the 2013 is now listed at $599 - I seem to recall higher than this.

I'm wondering where they might have cut to bring that price down. The only major difference I see is the new pickups. The 2013 had a 490R and 498T, whereas the 2014 has "New Zebra Humbuckers"...

I'm wondering for how much they'll go, in store. $399? That would be practically the same as Epiphones...

Me I'm glad that they offer such bare bone instruments. I'm very happy with mine - much more than I expected. I can feel that maybe the frets could have used a bit more TLC, but nothing dramatic, and other than that, it's actually very nice.

That satin finish isn't for everybody though. For me, it's actually a plus on that specific guitar.

If I compare it to my Epiphones... Well, I love my Epi, but you can tell that some corner were cut short. The "binding" on my Les Paul Traditional is an exemple of that. So is the switch. The pick ups are pretty impressive though...

Epi SG vs Gibson's SGJ, I couldn't tell. I've tried quite a bunch of Epi SG last summer because I really wanted to like one but it never happened. Until a few months back when I did try one with the bigger neck - that one I dug.

Hi,

Interesting to see "Gibson", finally doing a few more Basses, and it probably shows that the Epi versions are not selling at all!

I have the Epi EB3 and I'm not enthused by it, and have not been able to get that thing to sing at all. I'm likely to spend on one of their other basses, the short scale one by Gibson to see if I can get going again.

However, I'm wanting to get a Fender a bit more than the Gibson. Have not made the decision either way, but I do miss DEARLY my original EB-0 that had the knobs the other way, which I still think is better for the strings and the vibrations, which made the instrument better.

It's a bass. It don't sing. It mostly booms.

Never played on one. The look is not for me. Makes me feel like one of those metal'ists, and I'm not really one of those, although I would want to take a Brittany Spears song and rip it with the metal riffs, see? Bad boy thing is fun!

I've always wanted a Thunderbird too. Though in my mind, it's not associated w/ metal but w/ The Cure' Simon Gallup.

Closest to a metal bass player w/ a Thunderbird I can think of would probably be Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe.

I never was familiar w/ other Gibson basses, besides those SG type. But I've recently discovered this beauty and I'd love to try one.

Nibbs Carter of Saxon plays a Thunderbird as his main bass:

And it sounds totally metal in his hands!
