Hi all!

Long time, no see!

I have a quick question.  My new computer will arrive today, and I will be upgrading my X2 Producer (which is on my old computer) to X3 Producer on the new one.  Do I have to have X2 on the new machine to perform the upgrade, or is X3 a complete install by itself?

Thanks for any tips.

X3 is a completely new install.....you don't need X2.

Congrats on the new machine/X3!!

Only thing to remember is that not all that was in X2 is X3 i.e V-Vocal so if you need them for any old projects you might want to install some of X2 selectively.

As Mesh says enjoy your new toys.

I have been leaving prior versions of Sonar on my computer, the advantage being twofold. If I want to load a project I did in X1 into X1 I can do that. Sometimes there can be complications with loading an old project on a new version of the software.Mostly regarding plug-ins and if they are there and arranged the same way.

Secondly, if you upgrade as opposed to a new install the new install will look at and try to keep many of your old settings from your previous install, not to mention I got to keep a few plug-ins that were eliminated from the clean install.

I am kind of dreading getting a new computer because I like how I have mine set up and don't look forward to making a bunch of changes. But sometimes cleaning house makes everything better too. The truth is all of us will be there sooner ot later.

Thanks guys.  I think I can selectively add the things I like from the previous versions since I have the disks. (like Pantheon from 8.5)  I seldom (if ever) go back to old work and am really looking forward to new projects....

I'm also backing up all my samples, loops, plugins, etc to an external drive, so they should be readily available too.

BTW.. the new rig is a customized Sweetwater Creation Station 450 (their best)...I had them install Win 7 PRO 64bit instead of Home Premium so I could install more than 16GB RAM...having it loaded with 32GB.  It will arrive on Friday.

REALLY looking forward to reloading Komplete 9...NOT!!!! ...LOL

Thanks again.

Sounds like you'll have a killer setup when your done with it. Good luck with that.

You could also keep the old computer and use the older programs on it. I'm not sure what I'll do when the time comes. It would be great if I could just mirror my drive and put it all on another computer. I don't think it's anywhere near that easy.

No matter how painless they say it will be I seem to always run into at least one snag. Starting from new eliminates a lot of problems but you have to load and customize the setup all over again. Once done though you'll have a nice setup.

One thing about V-Vocal, it is not a separately installable plug-in. When performing an advanced install, you will need to install the SONAR program files to get V-Vocal (at least that is how the X series works). Also R-Mix and VC-64 (aka Vintage Channel in the install process) were dropped from X3. They are separately installable plug-ins.

The new rig is up and running.  Upgraded to X3.  Loaded Komplete 9 in 3 hours!!!!  (Used to take all day!!)  Getting all my plugins and misc stuff reloaded right now.  Amazing how much stuff I accumulated in the last 2.5 years!!

Verdict:  The new Sweetwater Creation Station 450 is a formidable machine.  I did order mine with WIN7 PRO instead of the Home Premium it normally is supplied with.  That way I got 32GB RAM in it.  But beware, there is no PCi slot in it...(having to get a PCie card today for my Firewire.)  The 450 comes with a Thunderbolt port however.  The SSD is nice.  It is also SUPER quiet.
