Instructors have a saying about those VASI lights:

Red over white - you're all right
White over white - you'll fly all night
Red over red - you're dead
White over red... Unless you're a stunt pilot, probly not the best way to land cause you're upside down.

Though this runway was using PAPI lights. Your aim? Make PAPI proud.

Flight sim - the runway looks fake.

Gee- it really would be the uncanny valley if it was a flight sim.

Looks real to me. If you pause the video at different points on the runway, it looks very natural. If it is a sim, I want it.

Copy that. The view from the front seat is kind of surreal anyway, but this is the real deal.
Very nice approach.. This is hairy, but not nearly as bad as Lukla or Courchevel. I have the utmost admiration for the guys that are qualified for those.

Hi,

I was thinking that this scenery was also used in a film 55 some years ago. Kinda suggests that Stanley Kubrick used this same similar footage for his Dr. Strangelove film, that has a lot of similar stuff in it towards the end of the film. With some spots obviously colored in for us to see.

But this one was nice. Really nice.

It looks like they used a "dash cam" placed on top the instrument panel. Very similar wide angle shot as used in car videos but never seen in a simulator.

Also, from 3:39 to 3:44 you can see a jet-skier in the lake right in front of the approach path, and street traffic in front of the runway... the computing power needed for this to be a simulator would be phenomenal even for the military...

Unless it was posted by aliens.

Was that the one with the planes flying in between the sky scrapers or something?

There are quite a few airports around the world that are much hairer places to land a plane even on a clear VFR day....

A TV show called the 10 most dangerous airports in the world highlighted them some time back.   Several of them will not permit pilots who have not had airport specific landing training and check rides to land at those airports.

One, IIRC, is over a road, to a runway that is sloped down hill and into a lake at the end....if you approach too high or fast, and don't get stopped in time, you and your plane go swimming.

On simulators:  I have a few of the older sims... from around 2001 or so, but the realism factor in the new ones is uncanny. With computing power in the gamer machines, handling HD video graphics is no problem.   It's getting more and more realistic... but at least you can still walk away from the crashes....
