I was at school with this lad...just Googled him tonight to see if there was any of his playing up there. 
 
He was a bit of an oddball at school, at least we thought he was. The fact that he played the melodeon didn't really help. 
 
I didn't see or hear anything about him for years after leaving school, then I remember one night sometime in the 90's listening to BBC radio and hearing the most beautiful celtic melodeon music coming from the speakers. It was really something special - celtic melodies but with rich, sophisticated harmonies played delicately with the left hand. And just as I was thinking "who the hell is this, it's amazing," the tune finished and the DJ gave us his name. It was the lad I used to know from school. 
 
Don't know why he popped into my head again tonight, but I did a search and found this video of him playing on YouTube. It really is some lovely music (although the sound quality on the video isn't that hot). 
 

So why isn't that device called an accordian?

Accordianing to Wikipedia, a melodeon is a diatonic button accordian.

Very nice melodic playing.......I bet his "oddball" and unique talent will be sought after (not too many people play the melodian these days, and play it well at that).

As far as I know he's been pretty much sought after in the melodeon world since the early 90's. He used to play with Kathryn Tickell, who was (or is) quite big on the British folk scene. And (perhaps more significantly) he has recorded and performed with Sting.

Yep, he was featured on Sting's 'If On a Winter's Night' album a couple of years back, and on the accompanying documentary. Very talented guy.
