I'm willing to bet your half a million would go much further in Vegas. Canadian winter is so depressing in a city with the grey slush, frozen cars and cold. I just got back from FLA and I'm missing it already. Live in the desert. Build one of those high efficiency homes that's half underground and get off the energy grid.
 
If this doesn't fit your plan then don't worry, there's tons of old buildings waiting to take all your money in the name of character.

I've been in the US for over a decade and have no desire to go back to Newcastle...Facebook keeps me in touch with everyone, and there are a few people I really get on with, but to be honest it's just depressing to see that so many of my old friend's lives seem to revolve around TV and booze. You need less friends as you get older...when I was 20 I could probably count over 50 people who I saw as friends....these days it's more like 6 or 7. Your tastes refine and you drift apart.
