" Got it. Point made. Get over it." Once again I won't be told to get over anything and I'll determine how long I want to be offended or what I choose to be offended over.

I'm not really offended right now but it isn't because someone told me to "get over it". If your sick does someone tell you to " get over it"? Wish it was that easy really.

FWIW if I've offended you you don't need to get in any hurry to get over it. Take your time.

[Pendantic]
Should be "If you're sick"

There's nothing for me to be offended about. These are just words on a forum. Who cares?

Well, 'offense' is, quite obviously, a very personal thing.

I'm a firm believer in the concepts of free speech. But free speech within the law.

If, during the course of exercising my free speech, I write or say something that isn't true, then the law is there to protect those I've libelled or slandered. If I urinate on the pews in a church, I'm pretty certain I've caused criminal damage, among other crimes.

If I 'offend' someone by simply expressing a different opinion to theirs, but otherwise remain within the laws of the land, I'm afraid that's tough.

Insulting someone's looks or lifestyle is just bad manners, and breaks the golden rule. Anyone who simply does this to provoke a reaction or to belittle someone is a jerk in anyone's language.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again - the whole concept of being "offended" is a load of crap. People claim they're "offended" for one reason only - so they can elevate themselves into a position of moral superiority and chastise someone else, which they thoroughly enjoy."  I think we all  have at one time been offended, yourself included.Imagine someone close to you like a family member you really like and then imagine me making  innuendos and jokes about them in a way that seems to be derogatory. You can't tell me you wouldn't be offended and protective. Imagine me giving you the equivalent of spit in your face. If I started to clown about your girl friend or wife how would you feel? I don't think you would walk off laughing and thinking I was just having my fun. At the very least you would probably be having a few words with me and I would deserve it. As I see it, what you have said is no one else is allowed to ever be offended about anything, that is unless I step on your toes. In that case I guess you have a right to be offended.  I agree with Rain here that I see some corruption in the institution that is the Catholic faith, but I also see a lot of good well meaning people in that particular faith who would never hurt a flea. I think for me this all tied into the other discussion and since we hardly or seldom ever make fun of any religion here the timing to the other discussion was unavoidable. The whole idea of the joke and the attempted avoidance of the obvious slam to Catholics everywhere is also unavoidable. I don't care how many shovels you use to try and dig out of it.  To you so called Christians who see nothing wrong with it. What would your limit be here? How about we urinate on your pews would that do it for you? How about we reword your Biblical terms and make it all some kind of obscene joke?   At this point I'm done with much more comment on the issue. I would compare it to making a joke about obese people while sitting in front of one. Maybe one obese guy would laugh right back but maybe someone else who has been battling the condition for years might be offended.   The very idea that noone should ever be offended is absurd and doesn't work in the real world. The idea that I am told what should or should not offend me is also absurd. Thats sounds more like control to me than someone who is offended supposedly taking some kind of moral high ground, which I'll take the right to think that this is absurd. I'll get offended at whatever I want ;) and you won't tell me what that is. The herd mentality doesn't work on me.  I hope I haven't offended anyone, but I probably did.

I think it's possible to feel "hurt" when someone insults you or a loved one personally, but let's face it this whole concept of "offense" is something entirely different. The whole concept of feeling offense because someone made a joke about some tribe or group that you belong to is total BS. I stand by what I said - the reason why such "offense" is commonplace is because people use it as a political weapon. It gives them leverage to obtain sympathy and ultimately legislation in their favor.

As for people being offended by words like "ass," well that's just too ridiculous for words. It's a part of the human body everyone has. You're probably sitting on one now. Being offended by a word is so arbitrary. Where does it end? Can I just choose a collection of letters and declare that I'm offended by them? Life is way too short to feel offended and there are way more important things to worry about.

I agree Sharke, and it should be pointed out that the word "ass" in this context specifically referred to a certain 4 legged animal.

It's merely the workings of a fertile mind that lend any sort of amusement to the whole "story"

I see no religious connotations there whatsoever

Agreed. It could have been a doctor, bartender, anything. That's what makes it so ridiculous that people get so bent outta shape about it.

If I didn't know better Sharke I would think you sound offended here.

Since there's an offend, is there an onend to counter it?

Kind of weird when things seem to happen around the same time at different places.

I work for a large chemical company and employee conduct is a major topic and there
are major changes going on in the workplace. There has been for a long time but within the
last few days...crazy.

The reason(s) are simple; if a person is not comfortable and feels they have been insulted, harrassed or distracted that makes it difficult for them to focus on their job duties then
they can report it. There will be an investigation and the lawyers will advise how the company should proceed.

It is extreme. It is to the point that if "Joe" and "Jim" are talking and "Jack" happened by and overheard
something that offended him then he can report it. It will be investigated.

Although I enjoy a good joke I realize that where I work if I told the joke posted here, for example only, that I could be fired...and probably would be.

Not two days ago there was an investigation because two people had been using language that was no worse than what I've read here in the forums and it is possible they could lose their jobs. No, I'm not kidding. It's currently under investigation.

There are many people walking around here trying to figure out how to "change" from being what most of us would probably consider to be "normal" into something "different" than what they are.

I've come to a complete understanding. I don't talk to them about anything other than the job and
I talk to them with the same vocabulary/manner that I would as if a group of nuns had gathered around us.

They want "good" robots. I can say that within the last few days they have created a crew of them that I'm aware of and I'm sure I'll be seeing more created before I get to retire.

I remember when Khrushchev told Kennedy.."we don't have to destroy the US, you will be destroyed from the inside"....or to that effect. I'm beginning to believe he was right.
