iLok2 required.  For some that will be enough to take a pass.

Yep, too bad.
Phoenix is killer. If I needed a verb this would be it.

There was a time when I was anti-iLok, but there are just too many great tools out there that require it -- Slate, Softube, Sonnox, Soundtoys, Kush, and the list goes on.  These reverbs coming out lately are very enticing as well.  You're limiting yourself quite a bit by shunning the dongle.

(I'm assuming we're talking about a desktop machine here -- obviously there are other factors if you're working on a laptop.)

An easy way to obtain an iLok is to buy RC-Tube from Slate for $50, which is a fair price for the plugin itself.  You'll receive a shiny new iLok2 as part of the deal.

Cheers,
Eddie

I keep thinking that someday some must-have product will come along that requires iLok, and then I'll cave. But it hasn't happened yet. Certainly not in the reverb category anyway, where world-class non-iLok alternatives are especially plentiful.

I'm still not for it but hopefully sometime soon it will be no longer be necessary. The $35.00 I spent for it around 2001 won't matter much in hindsight.
I got the iLok2 free from Slate Digital when VCC switched over from iLok1 so it will matter even less.

Hi Carl, I assume you were able to try the Phoenix verb in Sonar?  I couldn't get it to pass the VST scan.  Couple other guys posting on GS had the same problem.  Are you on X2?  I'd really like to try this, but it apparently isn't quite ready for prime time.

Kind of a surfeit of new reverbs lately ... not only Exponential and Relab, but Sean Costello (Valhalla) has an excellent Vintage Verb that is giving me some great sounds.  His stuff is so cheap and good (and Sean is a friggin' genius and super-cool to boot) that only something magical would replace it for me.

Eddie,

There's issues with this new release.
x64 version isn't working in X2 so I used 32b instead to demo.
The GUI is funky too. You might want to wait a while untill Michael gets it sorted out.
It didn't really bother me as the PhoenixVerb is exceptional.

I know what you mean. Until Slate's FG-X came out I was sort of anti-iLok. Not no mo. Once I was there, Waves V8 became possible. Of course V9 no longer requires it but I have quite a handful of iLok plugs now.

Now, you'll probably say "But Ed, you can do all that FG-X does without an iLok."
