Finger cymbals: never knew I was lacking them until today. Thanks, Greg.

27 MB worth of samples for a one-note library of finger cymbals! I shouldn't be surprised, I guess.

That reminds me of the time years ago my jazz/funk band got double-booked with a belly dancing group. Guess what their compromise was? Let me just say, it was pretty hilarious watching them attempt to belly dance to odd meter Mahavishnu Orchestra type music. After a few tunes, we took a break and let them use our PA to play their CDs on.

And now, it’s my pleasure to announce the winners of the Orange Tree Samples 2013 Demo Contest. Contestants had the task of writing original songs prominently featuring at least one commercial Orange Tree Samples library.

We had tons of great entries, which made our job of choosing the winners difficult, but ultimately three contestants came out on top. Presenting:

3rd place ($40 gift certificate and our upcoming SLIDE Acoustic guitar library)
Stuart Moore - Laying Down The Funk
Featuring: CoreBass Pear, Passion Flute

It’s a lucky bassist who gets the pleasure of jamming on a tune like this. Featuring a catchy unison melody with plenty of chromaticisms and a chord progression that’s a blast to solo over, this composition is easily a go-to jazz/funk jam standard. The flute solo towards the end of the piece is worthy of Ron Burgundy.

2nd place ($60 gift certificate and our upcoming SLIDE Acoustic guitar library)
Ettore della Campa - Orange Funk
Featuring: Iconic Bass Jaco, Lap Steel Guitar

Jaco would be proud of this 12-bar blues based funk jam. Who would have thought that such a rocking solo could be played on a lap steel guitar, too?

1st place ($100 gift certificate and our upcoming SLIDE Acoustic guitar library)
René Gade - October Orange
Featuring: Evolution Rosewood Grand, Cherry Electric Bass, Lap Steel Guitar, Passion Flute, Evolution Acoustic Guitar - Steel Strings, Angelic Zither, Mark Tree, Rainstick

This song has tons of awesome ambient elements going on. The way the form of the song builds and then subsides is masterfully done. The harmonic movement and rhythm during the melody is reminiscent of mid 90’s Yellowjackets.

Congratulations, and a big thanks to all of you for participating in the demo contest! All other contestants will receive $10 gift certificates. The prizes will be delivered via email shortly.

Just bought three more, Cherry Electric Bass, CoreBass Pear, and Iconic Jaco because I doubt we will see 50% off again in the near future.  Already purchased EB-Rick.  So, now i have my basses covered.  I hope to use these in place of similar basses in Trillian, which really does take a lot of memory.  Now that I figured out how to load the Rick in Kontakt 4 with less DFD memory, the OTS basses will become my default team.

[[Edit:  below]]
I wanted to let forum members know that the CoreBass Pear has eight different .nki instruments (consider them presets) representing eight different nuanced styles of upright basses.  When I first looked on the OTS site and the videos, I thought there was just one .nki, but to my happy surprise there were eight very usable nki's which have different style/character to them.  This makes the CoreBass Pear more versitile than i had first thought.  Here they are:
1 Default nki
2 Pop Uptright
3 Jazz Bass
4 Electric Upright
5 Psychodelic
6 Retro Standup
7 Rockabilly
8 Smooth

Thanks for the info on this - never knew.

Gonna grab this one too while I still can.
