Ol Henry's got a longstanding reputation as something of a douche. In and out of the company. And just look at how he prices his "instruments". We musicians are a gullible lot and he certainly has proven he knows, at least, that.
Actually there was an interview with Henry in one of the financial papers (Wall Street Journal?) many years ago. He basically said that when he
raised prices he sold
more guitars. I think it's a matter of it being a "luxury good" model, where consumers follow a very different logic (if any at all).
And one of the interesting things about Gibson is that if you want to buy a Les Paul that says "Gibson" on the headstock, you can buy largely the same guitar at anywhere from ~$1200 for a Studio model (less for some other models) to $6000 or more. Any differences (PU's, binding, fancier wood) amount to a small fraction of the price difference. And often there's very little difference
at all for widely varying prices, so they're basically saying, "pay what you want".
And people do.
