Just a quick one to see if anyone is aware of any decent 'real life' mixing tutorial videos. I've got a ton of books on mixing and watched a ton of videos on 'how to mix ...', but I'm quite interested in watching someone mix an actual song, talking through their thought process, what they're doing and why. Not just a generic video that attempts to apply a single rule to every scenario.

Would the tutorials at Grove3 and Lynda.com be too generic?

There are countless variations of this available commercially and for free. Mesh mentioned lynda and youtube, which are excellent. The recording revolution channel on youtube has been invaluable to me. Some vids are general, but address very specific mix issues. Even though he uses Pro tools, his info applies to any DAW.

you can watch a hundred videos....
 
but until you spend the time actually mixing,
it's not going to pay off at all.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out. I'm familiar with Recording Revolution, only from a series he did a while back, something along the lines of 30 mix tips in 30 days. Which was good for picking up little nuggets of information.

Appreciate that, and I have been having a stab at my own mixing. But I always find it useful seeing other peoples way of doing it. I have a 'process' that I follow, but seeing real life examples will definitely give me things to think about. Also nice sometimes just to see how the other half live

There is a guy on YouTube,  I believe goes by the name of maskerade that does walkthroughs of his own songs in Sonar. His workflow is totally different  than mine but his results work for his genre (r&b). The downside of videos like his is that it sometimes is short on technical help and long on comcommentary about his own song, but it is certainly a true walkthrough.

It's well worth getting a subscription to Groove3, there are multiple mixing courses for various styles where they take you through the whole process. It's interesting to watch someone mix music of a style you never listen to yourself.

A cheesy and amateurish video, edited by somebody who apparently just got Vegas and hadn't actually read the manual yet. But you can get the project files used in the tutorial and despite the lack of continuity (it's not a step-by-step tutorial) it is surprisingly inspiring. Charles Dye was, if not the first, at least one of the very first people to be awarded an engineering Grammy for an all-digital production, at a time when digital wasn't being taken very seriously in pro audio.

I watched one of those ideas a while back - how to make a single vocal sound like a stadium full of people singing or something and thought his "trick" sounded very unconvincing, so I didn't bother with the rest. Are there any particular vids of his that you can recommend as I don't really want to sit through them all if the end result of the one I watched is anything to go by ?
