I don't know what it is but every time I hit the spacebar playback just stops dead, no error message or nothing, this sux!

What happens when you hit it again- after it stops...

I'm looking for practical help here and frankly expected a more technical approach to fault finding my problems...sheesh!

Have you tried posting this problem upstairs? There may be others with similar issues.
 
I'm still on X2, but when I have this type of problem with playback, I just have to reinstall my Line6 drivers for my audio interface and all is well.......YMMV. 

...well it was a technical approach to me...I remember my music teacher
told me, "if you hit a wrong note, hit it again". I'm not sure why but it did
cause me some embarrassing moments....and I still do it. So technically I'm 
screwed-up.
I could probably record in half the time that it takes me.

Have you engaged in the requisite screaming matches regarding your choice of sound cards?  I've found that shrieking baseless accusations in the absence of any and all facts is a vital part of the process.  While beating your DAW may not actually fix the problem, it may result in the purchase of a new DAW.  In that case, try purchasing a keyboard without a space bar. 
 
As a last ditch effort, you might copy a photo from the internet and post it as a picture of your studio.  That should help.

The last time I tried to use the space bar they told me I wasn't allowed to use the facilities unless I buy a drink.  Then they got really rude...

usually one would storm out of the forum.. declaring Sonar XXX a piece of crap, that you are moving to grim illogical studio reaper, or sum other such daw..
