Vinny Appice, who's one of my favorite rock/metal drummer is coming to GC in Vegas - and I'm missing the event because we're out of town that exact day. He and Carmine were playing BB's place in NY while we were there - and I missed them every time I thought I could go.

I'm not educated when it comes to drums. I don't have the resources to enjoy subtle stuff. Ian Paice is probably the most subtle drummer I can enjoy. John Bonham is God of all things you can hit with sticks. Appice is one of the few others I really dig.

I'm off to listen to Mob Rules and Holy Diver again...

I got to see him in '97 with Dio on the Angry Machines tour. Awesome... My favorite drummer (living, at least).

I love his work w/ Dio. Unfortunately, I never got to see any of those tours.

I'm usually not a big fan of tributes, but I'm crossing my fingers that Last in Line will play Vegas. This would be 2 for 1 actually, as Vivian Campbell was one of my favorite guitar players when I was a kid.

Who is in that band? I met Vivian at a Kramer clinic in '87. He was playing the next night at Notre Dame with Whitesnake. Got to shake his hand and he signed my guitar strap. I remember he kept wanting to talk about the guitar, and we all kept calling out for him to play solos off of Dio songs. I remember he played the holy diver solo. Good concert the next night too. Somebody jumped onstage and punched David Coverdale in the face. But I'm getting off topic. So who's in this tribute band? If I read your post right, Vivian is? If so, that's surprising considering all the bad blood between him and Dio.

I was surprised as well, but I've read a couple of interview where both of them seemed to come to term with it.

Last in Line is the original band (Vivian, Jimmy Bain, Vinny Appice, Claude Schnell) w/ Andrew Freeman (Lynch Mob) on vocals.

Wow. That would be something to see. I feel bad for Andrew though. It's pretty much impossible to fill Dio's shoes. It would be cool if they would write some new material. I would buy it in a second.

Hey Rain, I just checked out a few songs from their gig at the Slidebar in CA on 8/3. Wow... Viv's playing like he's 20 years old again. Vinnie, Jimmy and Claude sound tight as can be. What a band... Andy sounds great too. Not to sound stupid but I had tears in my eyes listening to the solo in "Don't Talk To Strangers". They are so tight together. Too bad the sound quality of the video sounded so bad but the chemistry still came through. I didn't know Vivian had cancer. Sounds like he caught it early so hopefully he'll be fine. But man, thank you for telling me about them getting back together.

Glad you appreciate it! :)

I've been rediscovering a lot of those old records recently - there's nothing like 80s metal in the gym. I'd forgotten how much I liked Vivian's playing. And from what I've read on Facebook, he really put his heart into the reunion project.

I'm familiar with his older brothers work.
One of the best works ever recorded IMO.

Hi,

The two drummers I like to listen to the best are the late Pierre Moerlin (make sure you get "You" from Gong, or "Exposed" with Mike Oldfield) ... or Steve Gadd. If you don't know Steve Gadd, just get kate Bush's "50 Words for Snow" ... to find out what ... "no drumming" is all about!
